As a long time MGS fan, I'm actually fine with Hayter not reprising his role as Big Boss in MGS 5 (or V, whatever.) for numerous reasons. 1. Personal opinion, but I think Hayter's Snake voice has gotten worse with each installment. Don't get me wrong, I like the guy just fine, but his voice went from being badass in MGS1, to slightly forced but still good in MGS2 and MGS3, to straight up ridiculous in MGS4. I get that he's older and ill, but damn, it wouldn't hurt to tone it down a bit. His voice as Big Boss in Peace Walker was even more absurd than it was in MGS4. 2. He should never have voiced Big Boss to begin with. Out of the three clones: Solid, Liquid, and Solidus, it was only Solidus that was a near perfect 1:1 clone of Big Boss. It would have made far more sense to give Big Boss either Solidus' voice or a new actor all together. Using Hayter and his unique voice for Big Boss only made things more confusing. 3. It seems Big Boss is near his 50's during MGSV. It makes sense to use a different voice actor that resembles Richard Doyle (Big Boss MGS4) more than Hayter. 4. The new voice actor did a good enough job (based on what little we've heard). I've heard people say he sounds younger now, but that's only because he's not doing that ridiculous gravel voice that Hayter does as Big Boss and Old Snake. So far we've only heard the Ground Zeroes trailer in Japanese (same Japanese Big Boss voice) and the Phantom Pain trailers in English (new English Big Boss voice). Since Ground Zeroes takes place right after Peace Walker, keeping his old voice then makes sense. We haven't seen it in English so it's still possible Hayter will voice him at that point in the game. Once he goes into his 9 year coma, it's the perfect time to alter his voice somewhat. Otherwise we'll either have Solid Snake and Big Boss speaking to each other using the same voice, or Big Boss will magically change his voice once Solid Snake appears. Kojima stated in an interview awhile back that he wasn't done with Solid Snake. I highly doubt much can happen after MGS4, so that leaves prequel stories (aka remakes of MG1 and MG2). If Big Boss is transitioning into the bad guy he ultimately becomes in MG1, his voice changing after the coma helps symbolise this and makes any future conversations with Solid Snake appear much less awkward. I'm all in favor of Hayter reprising his role as SOLID Snake (especially if he's younger. Hopefully his voice will sound closer to his MGS1 performance), but as Naked Snake/Big Boss? No. As long as the new person can strike a balance between David Hayter's MGS3 Big Boss and Richard Doyle's MGS4 Big Boss, I have absolutely no problems with it.
Wow, I'm shocked. Nobody disagrees with me? Or maybe you guys just don't care. Yeah, that's probably it. So there was a strange video released over a week ago. Didn't see it mentioned on here before, sorry if it was. Fan made? Possibly. It's not like it's impossible for someone to make a custom Moby Dick Studios shirt or buy a some medical bandages at Wal-Mart. But I (as well as many others) think it's actually David Hayter. Just some points I'd like to bring up. 1. It works with the story. As I mentioned in the post above, Big Boss' voice had to change at some point, and now is the perfect moment to make the switch. But in order for that to work, we'd still need to hear David Hayter as Big Boss prior to his 9 year coma. The only Ground Zeroes trailer we've seen is dubbed in Japanese, so it's not unreasonable to think he will reprise his role in Ground Zeroes but not Phantom Pain. 2. The response he made about not being in MGSV was typed out on April 1. He even made it a point to put the date at the end of the message. How much more obvious does he have to make it? 3. "I am a Hollywood actor and I do voice overs and my voice was used in many popular computer animated movies." Tecnically Hayter has done all those at least once in his career (according to imdb). 4. "I am the one you thought I would be from the start." Most people would assume Hayter always voices Snake, so of course he would be the one we thought he'd be from the start. 5. "To clear things up, I am a man." (comment outside video) That should've been obvious to anyone with a functioning brain, so why would that even be mentioned? Well Hayter responded to a tweet (which has since been deleted as far as I can tell) basically impying the person was female and thus couldn't have anything to do with Hayter or Snake. You would think him being a man is just common sense, so why would this person address that in the comments? Because Hayter tried to play dumb on twitter and make you think he's just as clueless as everyone else? Hmm... 6. "I am at least 6 feet tall" (comment outside video) Hayter is 6'1. 7. "Major update will come within the next 72 hours. The truth will finally be revealed. Project Deception was a success. Please accept my apologies in advance." I guess we'll know in 24 hours (posted 2 days ago). 'Project Deception' could mean either it was some guy with nothing to do with anything just messing with everyone, a publicity stunt by another voice actor (possibly the one playing the bandaged guy or even the new Big Boss) to purposely make others think he's Hayter, or it could be David Hayter himself. The 'deception' being that he misled us into thinking he wasn't going to be involved. I don't think this another case of a game studio replacing a popular and established voice actor for asinine reasons (Splinter Cell: Blacklist, Thief 4). This is a case of a character transitioning from a "misunderstood hero" to the batshit crazy warmongering villain we know he'll become in MG1 and 2 (assuming Kojima doesn't decide to retcon that as well). Kojima and Hayter are doing this to build up hype and speculation. Hayter will be in it at the start, he just won't be there to finish it.
Haha, what do you know, it was fake. (I would simply edit the above message, but it won't let me post more than 1 video. Was it always like that?) It's always funny to hear the average joe attempt a Solid Snake voice and fail miserably at it. Or maybe he's trying to be Batman or Wolverine? Who knows. I still think Hayter will be involved in Ground Zeroes. I suspect at E3 we'll get an English version of the Ground Zeroes trailer and when he says "Kept you waiting huh?" in Hayter's voice, the fanboys will simultaneously cream their pants and all will be well again. At least that's what I'm hoping, as a voice change prior to the coma makes absolutely no sense. But why the hell did Hayter think the person in the video was a woman? And why did he delete the tweet mentioning it? Odd.
As long as we get Hayter in Ground Zeroes at least, I can live with it. At least the voice change can somewhat make sense then in TPP after 9 years of being in a coma. Just as long as it doesn't sound younger
I don't think the voice heard in The Phantom Pain trailer sounded younger, but many people think seem to think otherwise. I know a lot of fans aren't fond of the idea of Hayter not doing the voice, but I really do think it's for the best. Keep Hayter for Ground Zeroes, but make the change after the coma in Phantom Pain. Then should Kojima decide to remake Metal Gear 1 and 2, Hayter will be able to properly voice Solid Snake without it sounding awkward whenever Solid Snake and Big Boss converse. Plus, Konami would be stupid to get rid of Hayter completely. How many lead actors are willing to cut half of their entire paycheck so everyone else can reprise their roles?
So it happened. Kiefer Sutherland will indeed play Big Boss in MGSV. I have mixed feelings about this. Nothing to with Kiefer though, I know he'll do a great job. My concern is with the given reasoning behind it. I don't buy it, any of it. I don't believe for a second that David Hayter couldn't do what they're having Keifer do (acting credentials aside). They want Big Boss' voice to sound more mature since he's 49, but isn't Hayter in his early 40's? Couldn't they just tell him not to do the ridiculous gravel voice? Couldn't they tell him they want a more subtle role this time around? And even if Hayter couldn't do any of the mocap stuff, what's stopping them from having someone else do it and redub the voice with Hayter's? Makes no sense, they just basically fed us the same bullshit Eidos spewed when they explained why they got a new voice actor for Garrett in the new Thief game. It seems Kojima is doing this less for story reasons, and more because he has a reverse-weeaboo boner and couldn't resist the idea of someone from "Hollywood" doing the lead voice of his game. Makes me worried that he's replacing Hayter for good. That's absolutely NOT what I want. And while I'm on the subject, something else I'm wondering. One of the reasons many fans gave for the switch was that Big Boss is becoming a bad guy and that he's going to do bad guy things, so hearing Hayter's voice would somehow lessen the experience since we associate his voice with a good guy. Um... wouldn't the opposite be true? Wouldn't hearing Hayter voice (Naked) Snake during his decline be far more impactful to the player than hearing a new guy do it? It would be like if in Star Wars episode III where Anakin betrays Mace Windu and accepts the title Darth Vader, they instantly switched his voice to James Earl Jones because Hayden Christensen's voice is already established as a "good guy". Only in that instance they made it work by having Jones do the voice after Vader got cooked. In MGSV the switch can be justified with nearly dying and being in a 9 year coma, but if they don't go that route the switch will make no actual sense. I'm still hoping for Hayter in Ground Zeroes and Kiefer in Phantom Pain, with Hayter as Solid Snake and Kiefer as Big Boss in MGS6. And I might as well make this post even longer by addressing another issue that's been pissing me off. Long ago gamesradar had some list about Solid Snake with the majority of the pictures being of Naked Snake/Big Boss. Yahoo has an article right now incorrectly stating that Sutherland is the new voice of Solid Snake. Hell, even the current gamefaqs poll says he's the new Solid Snake. Sutherland is not, I repeat, FUCKING NOT, voicing SOLID Snake in MGSV. He is voicing BIG BOSS. They are NOT the same character. I know the Metal Gear games are a convoluted mess, but get your goddamn facts straight people. This is why Hayter should've never voiced Big Boss to begin with, because the general public is too stupid to know the difference.
Who cares, really? MGS fans really get riled up over the dumbest things. James Bond, one of the most iconic characters ever created, has had 6 actors (8 if you count the previous Casino Royale's) play him, and people accept it. I've lost count of the amount of voice actor changed the RE series has had. They change one voice actor in an MGS game and it's fire and pitchforks time. Maybe instead of complaining about pretty frivolous things like that you should demand Kojima pull his head out his ass and inject some logic into the plot of the series (if that's even possible at this point).
While many fans are getting pissy, A lot of MGS fans are actually supporting this. I'm supporting it too, I just don't like the reason they gave for the switch. It'd be hypocritical of me to bash Eidos for doing it but not Kojima. And yeah, I do get riled up over dumb things. I'm just tired of hearing about how Solid Snake is getting a new voice actor in the upcoming game when the character isn't even in it. These people get paid to not do proper research. James Bond is a live action movie franchise that has been around since the 50s. Do you want to watch a modern Bond movie with Grandpa Bond portrayed by Sean Connery? Of course they change actors over time. Hayter has been doing the voice since 1998. People associate his voice with the character. Again I'd like to point out it's not the switch that bothers me, it's the reason why. I hated it when Namco replaced Lloyd's (the main character) voice actor in Tales of Symphonia because they were too cheap. I hated it when Ubisoft announced Sam Fisher (the main character) will have a new voice because of mocap bullshit. Is it really so hard to grasp that fans won't always be happy when characters, especially main characters, who have a unique and iconic voice, suddenly get a completely different voice for no good reason? Now who's being ridiculous? You know that's not possible.
Bad example, because nothing in that movie worked, especially Anakin's turning to the dark side and becoming Darth Vader in about three minutes. Hell, they might as well have changed his voice to Jones's at that point because of how abrupt it was.
