So i've gone through a lot of the info out there and since the site xbox-scene.com no longer is running I'm having a tough time piecing together my best option so I figured i would just ask.

One of my original xbox's that i got in a lot won't boot and gives the '05' Error Code....the HDD is not locked. Which i understand.

My questions is: what is the best option to fix this, and while I'm at it allow the xbox to play other region games.
Should I find a modchip? I can take a part the xbox and am capable of soldering...if this, which chip is the most current?
Or should I softmod, and if so, which method/dash etc?

Not that interested in any of the other features that I've seen modchips/softmods have like larger HD upgrade or emulators/XBMC.

and of course as soon as i post this and then go check the xbox in question.... looks like the previous owner already put a 250gb HDD in there lol. so i guess as long as its ok, the larger HDD upgrade is done

Use the EDIT button, don't double post. - HEX1GON

I'd probably try to find a (preflashed) modchip to get around the 05 error (hacked BIOSes usually don't care if the hdd is locked or not). That would also take care of the region lock.

The other option would be to unsolder the eeprom to get the data necessary to calculate the correct password, then relock the drive elsewhere (e.g. on a PC)... And then install a softmod (if it isn't there already) or do a TSOP flash to take care of the region lock.

If there's another way I can't think of it right now.

    Simple fix...

    Get a modchip.

Get another Hard Disk (since you want to use emulators, and overall upgrade).

Download AID, prepare HDD Modchip with your Dashboard of choice.

    Done.

    OR long and slow method...

Build or buy an XBOX EEPROM Reader

    Extract the EEPROM.bin

    Remove Hard Disk from XBOX

Place Hard Disk in IDE Master motherboard

Make and burn XBOXHDM with your extracted EEPROM.

    Start up the "Lock/Unlocking tools"

    Lock with EEPROM.

Place Hard Disk back into XBOX, and boot.

Modchip would be the simple fix.

Although have you taken it apart to check there's not one already in there? I found an xbox recently that also gave error 05. Opened it up and it had a 200GB HDD installed. Took the hard drive and DVD drive out to discover there was a modchip that just wasn't seated properly. Once that was fixed, it was good to go.
