If some of you are wondering why I haven't responded to emails, the site backup server / mail server had it's psu blow up. I spent the last two days rewiring it as it's 16 hard drive, etc. Good news is everything is fine as far as data. Now I have to wade through the 450 or so emails, so don't think I've forgotten you.
Why not use real server hardware? Power supplies are redundant and hot swappable. You really do seem to pick the option that is the most unsuitable to its use and needs most maintenance. After the first few times I would have expected you to want the easiest option
