Greetings to all, this thread is to announce some changes, ideas, and
future plans for the site.

I've been getting a lot of E-mails from people wanting to contribute.
In order to do that, there needs to be some changes to the site.
Demands for a portal, affiliate network, and other good ideas will be
addressed.

I'll start with the easy stuff, immediate changes:
----------------------------------------------
Changes--------------------------------------

The "site news" thread is now "User submitted articles and news".
This change is to shift the primary source of news from me to the users
(you).

This will hopefully get people more involved in posting articles,
mods, interesting pictures, and news.

I remind and invite you all to post news and pictures. Fresh content, even
if minor is a nice thing to see.

Some notable example would be the PSTOOL assembly/disassembly
article done by users here. I am very proud to see that quality of work.

Ideas and announcements:---------------------
-----------------------------------------------

Q.The site is needs rework. This I am aware of. Why has work been slow?
A. The primary controlling factor in my life is chronic pain from some surgery
and injuries. Some times I can't leave bed for days. So I have decided to change
the site to compensate for that.

Future Changes:

Adapt the site for user content and structured user control so that the site
can grow even when I am incapacitated.

What we are interested in doing so far:

A Portal. (I have no experience with this and need ideas)
User content system. (same)
Stronger wiki element.
Regular projects that anyone can contribute to.
Chat room.
Fresh design.
2chan style image board.

What we need to do immediately:

1.) Address the current VBB install and it's limitations:

We need a full upgrade to the newest VBB, or port to another bbs.

Our support ended a year ago, we have to fork over another
$1xx that VBB wants for upgrades.

*A fresh install and import of data.
1. We're still using a pirated copy, but we own a license.
2. It's completely hacked to shit and unusuable beyond what it does now.
a. cannot install any upgrades.
b. Failed attempt to add portal and other mod have it changed beyond recognition.
c. I cannot even ban people, the user class is corrupted.

This ties in to immediate problem #2.

2.) Find a new host: Operating costs and server fees.

It costs $131 a month for the site on a dedicated machine.
The current machine is so old and out of date, it's a joke.
The original idea was to have user sites, game server, etc.
The reality is I am physically limited to what I can do day to day.

* Shift to a sub $50 a month shared machine. I hate shared
machines, but I need to reduce running costs asap.
* Be able to host other sites.
* Will not immediately kill the site if they get a DMCA order.
(I think we're up to 7 this year alone)
* Must meet traffic and bandwidth demands.
47,558,509 hits (year)
305 gigs of data (year)

I have four years of school to retrain for a new career post injury.
This means I have to limit my costs as much as possible.

3.)Determine yearly operating costs and raise funds.
It's that or ads.

4.) T-shirts. It's been forever on our minds.

Far future changes (1 year or more)------------------
----------------------------------------------------

Change to a non-profit organization.

Deduct server fees and ability to set up a trust so the site
perpetuates forever.

Idea submission------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------

If you have ideas please structure them and use punctuation,
or at least text breaks.

Title the article: Idea X
Structure it:
1.
2.
a.
b.

Be patient while we review.

Goals----------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------

I hope to have the new VBB license next week, after
the american holiday of thanksgiving.

I hope to have the new host with fresh install within one month.

Begin installation of portal and plug-ins within
two weeks of the install.

Test and finalize. Port data and domain shift in two months from
today.

------------------------------------

Thanks for reading, your feedback is welcome and please don't forget to submit new ideas properly.
And yes, traffic is down since Halo 3 release,it did the same thing on halo 2 release.

I am all up for the subscription fee idea.

Also, how much is a fresh genuine copy of VBB? Out of all the forums i use, this software seems to be the most user & reader friendly.

ATEOTD Kev, you need to put your health and life first and the forum second, anything that can be passed over to others to help share the burden, do so.

I am sure that many of us are happy to help in what ever capacity we can. Even if it is just financially?

There are a lot of very good ideas in your post that i`m sure have been in the pipeline for awhile, as AG is a community it is only fair that the community helps pay for the upkeep as we all get to enjoy it daily.

T-shirts are a great idea, spotting someone else with one if I was in central London would be so much fun.

As FF said health first, there isn`t anything worth jeapordising that. Obviously that would be the first item on your to do list shifting the focus.

Wish you all the best Kev and hope you`re fighting fit ASAP you`ve created a great place for like minded individuals to talk bits, bytes, tits and ass :icon_bigg

anyway i'll make ready soon an article about videogames that i've had in my mind for a long time, and that i have in my heart. Hope i'll have time soon enough to post it.

No problem for paying a fee for being here. It would be great to have a T-shirt too!

That's great news! I'd really like to help, but getting a credit card without a decent job is extremely difficult here and I couldn't get one yet...
If is there another way to help, I'd really like to do it :D

Sounds great. If your looking for other web-solutions you should check out drupal, pretty nice CMS system with lots of plugins - and it's free ^_^
only bad about it would probably be the forum part, thought iirc you can integrate other forums with it.
And if there is any need for donations I would gladly help

I'd advise against this. It will change all the forum thread links, so any external links that go to a topic will be directed to an entirely different topic. I looked into it myself, its a bad idea.

I have lot of ideas for articles: Tectoy history, Gaming in Brazil, Gran Turismo timeline,... but lack of time is the issue.

As for the website, as much as people don't like, banners from stores like Play-Asia and others could help increase the $ income.

I'm all for the t-shirt idea, which would also benefit the site financially. You should have them printed with the year on them so we contribute year in, year out. Anyone seen with the equivalent of a 2002 t-shirt gets their ass kicked until they but the latest year lol

If the database table structure hasn't changed between the site's current version of VB and the upgraded version (or the changes are minor), then it might be possible to do a direct import. That is, create the tables with the newer version of VB, but overwrite them directly in the SQL database instead of relying on VB's upgrade/import abilities. That could preserve thread ID's and internal site links. One drawback is that it might require manually importing the user table as well to preserve user ID's. I'm not familiar with how VB's SQL tables are set up, so I cannot say for sure. As long as it is tested on a dummy site first, I don't see any risk.

As for the new server, I can only recommend mediatemple for a professional solution. Just look at their list of clients.. Adobe, Sony, Warner, ABC, Nike, TechCrunch and ofcourse 9rules and the countless designers and "web gurus" who are on it as well.

Their (dv) pack is great, its what I use at work:

http://www.mediatemple.net/webhosting/dv/

Take a good look at their prices and what they offer for it, it's not budget, but a great deal.

Yes this sounds like an advertising, but I'm indeed in love with that company ;-)
