A friend gave me her SCPH-77001 to take a look at. From what I can tell it seems to mostly work:

1)Laser sled happily moves around and the laser itself can be heard trying to focus
2)Will spin up discs quite nicely
    3)Fan comes on
    4)Video signal is being output

The only problem is that it sits at a black screen upon being turned on. The TV does indicate a change when it is powered on and off. The warranty seals are intact and I'm the only person who has ever opened the thing which rules out botched modchip installation. I'm wondering if the EE fuse being blown would produce such results?

One thing that could cause it to behave like that is bad EE RDRAM. It isn't bad enough to fail the initial ram test (the PS2 would not bother initializing the GS chip if the EE RDRAM was completely faulty) but it's making EE crash.

Edit: I'm considering that the PS2 has no mods. Modchips can cause such crashes depending on the fault they have.
