Recently replaced the laser on a 7700x PStwo that I picked up cheap but has an issue with CD based games.

When booting a CD based game (ps1 or blue backed ps2 cd) the laser at times comes up high and hits the disc. At first I thought it might be the common ribbon cable issue but after booting with the top case off it's clearly the laser.

Sometimes it's fine and reads them perfectly, other times it begins to 'bob' then go high scratching the disc. I'm aware that the fat ps2's had a setting to adjust the laser height but I can't seem to find one on the slim?

    Any suggestions?

The laser doesn't seem able to focus with it's current setup. I'm not aware of a way to adjust it but given there is a way in prior revisions there should be. If there isn't the laser could be going and require replacement.

There's a replacement IC you can solder in to fix this.damaged RS2004FS

Thanks, I'll look into it. Is there any reason why it only happens with CDs though (a logical reason). DVD based games/movies are fine, even the likes of GTA which tend to give the laser a hard time?

    Bit of an update,

This model doesn't use an RW2004FS and instead has a RS2006EF but this doesn't seem to be the problem in this case.

I replaced the Flex Cable just in case it was that but that was no different. However I then replaced the laser with another spare and that works perfectly. I've tested it the past couple of days with no issues at all.

So my next question is would adjusting the CD pot rectify it or is it simply dodgy. DVDs are fine either way.
