Just obtained a Slingbox Pro as Sky TV refused to multi-room our house because the conservatory at the rear of the property has a glass roofed conservatory. The 'special' installation team (presumably made up of people with higher insurance, lower life expectancies and experience falling from great heights) costs a lot more and therefore the Slingbox became a viable option rather than piss around with additional cabling, drilling holes in walls, ceilings, floorboards. So, I went into PC World (nearest supplier - mistake Number1), and was told by a shop floor assistant that it was £129.00, which I almost choked on. By the time I got to the counter it was actually £199.00! So, as I was turning to walk away they agreed to do it for the price they originally stated. Okay, so here's the deal. At Christmas, my eldest was offered Sky TV in her room as part of her present. She also got a TV / Monitor for her PC. So, when Sky pulled out I felt somewhat guilty as her Christmas present was gone. This was meant to be a compromise. I also like the idea of being able to access the TV from work, from anywhere really. It means that whenever I have my laptop and Internet access I can get News24 etc. Here's the annoying bit however. 1) I was told it was possible to view 2 different channels at the same time, hence the name 'Pro' (as I had read that the standard Slingbox units didn't). The seller was very confident about this point. I actually said 'In that case, given that it can then I'll take it' So, before anyone else gets caught out by this the 'Pro' version still doesn't allow the possibility of multiple access / channel separation. In my view that would be the most useful feature of these units and warrant the term 'Professional'. 2) Set-up couldn't have been easier on the iMac. Literally it was a 30 second download from the support site. Linked to my router it was immediately picked up. I then moved to my iBook and the same experience was had. So, I moved to the wife's MS XP laptop and although slightly longer to install, and less attractive skin I have to admit it was very straightforward. So, the main computer I wanted to install this on is Windows VISTA in my daughter's room. Downloaded the software as per usual, tried to set it up and it keeps seeing the unit, it's name and saying it is available, but it fails to connect with an error message that wasn't listed. Eventually I found it, but it doesn't relate to what I am doing as I am attempting to connect directly and not remotely. Much hair pulling later, checking that all the other computers still had access, checking set up information against the other units and making sure that the Kasperski anti-virus software wasn't blocking it, I still have the same error! So, I reinstalled it again... same issue! Anyway, I was going to ask whether anyone had attempted to use any games consoles, heard of any hacks that did this? I was thinking it might be nice to have a 360 linked up to my wife's XP laptop and a 360 USB controller plugged in. I wouldn't need to move my 360 upstairs!
Ignoring everything else that you said :icon_bigg, at minimum you will need a direct connection from the controller to the Xbox. You could always see if a wireless controller has the range to do what you want, but unless you can somehow setup a USB repeater through your network (which might not work either), a wired controller would have to go to the console itself. You could use a Play & Charge kit with the laptop if the wireless controller has enough range.
I've got a sling box and I had the same thought myself, I could finally sneak off to a secluded spot and get some Halo on. Problem is the slingbox has a 12 second delay and by no means is real time. unless your playing bejeweled or hexic, gameplay is going to suck.
