I didn't know about this, nice find! allthough I already have such a setup with my satellite receiver (dreambox 7020) that can stream the channels as well.. I then use VLC to compress the quality to a lower bitrate to be able to cope with my upstream and so I can watch tv on my pda using my phone as a bluetooth modem.. no more missing soccer matches for me But that Slingbox sounds like an easier solution tho..
I have one (slingbox), but not SKY who are showing it in the UK.....but no-one else I know has one here so clutching at strawers a bit!!
Ah! A Dreambox user... I've been considering switching to DVB-C and getting a cable-compatible Dreambox to go with it but they're quite expensive for my taste... is it worth it?
I don't have any experiance with the cable dreambox, but if you have any way of getting it to work with your cable isp's card then it's worth it. It's linux based, nice webinterface/streaming/recording local hdd or over the network and much more! quite a nice toy to play with. I have a satellite setup with the canal digitaal card, if you decide to go for that setup let me know I can help you get started.
Okay, thanks! I don't think satellite is a viable option in my case as I'm in a rented student house and I have only the lower floor (mounting a dish would be a problem), and currently the landlord pays for the cable subscription. From what I gather the cable Dreamboxes are pretty much identical, it's just a swappable module apparently. How quick is changing channels? Also, did you have to do a lot of customization to the unit? Are you 'cardsharing'?
Zapping is fast Just replacing firmware (7020 webinterface / 500 serial) plugins and some configs mostly in linux but there are many homebrew windows tools out there for anything you can think off for the lazy. No I don't as I am happy with what I already have plus many of free to air channels like : (bbc1/2/3/4/horror channel/travel just to name a few) It is possible to use/update cams/keys to emulate cards but this is time consuming, needs to be updated frequently and doesn't give any garantees. And off course the magic word "cardsharing" locally or over internet is possible, locally to share with your second box is legal and so there is much information about it to be found online. Sharing over internet is almost the same like locally but you will have to find people willing to share it with you and since it's illigal it will not be easy.

They aren't bad. The s-vid looks pretty damn good so if you want to get the more expensive one with the component its up to you. I was watching it off my laptop in the same room with my tv, and there was some lag but that is just from the stream to the tv to the laptop.
