Heya! I'm kinda new into collecting 'obscure video gaming stuff' and I have a small question concerning an article I bought some years ago. It is a completely black GameCube and the 'cover' of the mini-DVD (this thing you can bring up via pressing the right button; kinda hard to describe ...) is designed with a Metroid Prime (Samus, ofc) picture. Not something cheap like a sticker or stuff like that, but really 'made into' the case. Is this something I really should take care of? Or isn't it really seldom and I was just way to stupid to use Google in the right way? Thank you for your help in advance! =)
covers like these were regularly given away on magazine covers and in shops with purchases of games, you can pop them out from the inside of the lid although not highly collectable, they are still worth looking after, ive got a couple of final fantasy crystal ones, and some mario as well as far as i can recall, it was nintendos way of you being able to customise you case not sure how many differnet ones were released, may be worth looking into though
I *think* the metroid ones were given out in the generally shite stars catalogue. Probably a few thousand around, so not rare, but also not common. Someone else can probably confirm. Worth taking care of, but so are all gaming bits n pieces!
Perhaps it's the Metroid Prime bundle console. I don't know if the image was a sticker over the lid or not as I don't have the console. This is the best pic I've found on the internet:
Ah one of my friends had a couple of those (Metroid Prime and F-Zero I think?), I believe they were given away with the UK magazine "CUBE" early into the Gamecube's life.
Yay - thank you all for the answers! (I just checked the whole lid again and it's not like a sticker or so but more like a 'hard' plastic circle in the middle of the lid =)
The name for the part in question is "Nameplate Assembly" or often just "Nameplate". It is part DOL-018. It should be noted that these nameplates only work with the DOL-001 model gamecubes. The DOL-101 cubes (manufactured after March 04) no longer have removable nameplates, and also lack Digital AV output. As far as I know there were nameplates for the following: Metroid Prime Metal Gear Solid (Fox Hound logo) Tales of Symphonia Hoshin Tigers (Japanese baseball team) Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicals Gundam They were always given away as either sales promotions, magazine pack-ins, or with ltd. ed. cubes. (usually the case). EDIT - I just remembered there was also at least 1 Club Nintendo nameplate - it had Mario Kart Double Dash featured on it. Also Biohazard 4 had a nameplate with it's Limited Edition console.
I have one for Resident Evil 0 that was from CUBE magazine. I wonder how many different ones they gave away?
I can confirm the ones from "cube" were simply generic lids, with a plastic lining inside, so that you could put your own pictures, or the ones they printed in the magazine to be cut out, onto the top of the GC. They released a black one, and a purple one as far as I remember. The MKD and Resi 0 were proper carboard pieces INSIDE the lid, under the plastic, and looked a lot more professional than when ones were just cut out of the magazine
I can confirm that there were Metroid-Cubes with a removable Plate included, the ones I saw over here came with 2 plates, the standard and the Metroid one. What puzzled me though was that I once saw one Cube with a CLOTH Metroid inlay. Anyone ever heard of these, or was it just a crazed fans doing?
