Hey so today I modded a snes (mucked up the region mod but managed to fix it so it was all good) Aside from that I didn't have the 2.2k resistor for the 50/60 hz so I thought, never mind, might aswell make sure it all works so far anyway and to my surprise 60hz worked without being connected to anything at all so why would this be? Edit: Update The two legs from the chips i lifted snapped off and now what I basically have is a region free famicom (it was a pal snes) it runs in 60hz only and runs games from all regions which dont have a check for the refresh rate. So why do all the 50/60 hz guides specify the use of a 2.2k resistor and a 5v supply?
I think the reason why it works is because of the PAL60 thing which is why you would get the colour picture. Later model SNES's (single chip) you got to add an additional oscillator.
I was following a guide for a 2 chip snes anyway, the guide didn't mention anything to do with an oscillator, just attatching the two lifted pins to a 2.2k resistor and then the 5v line, that doesn't explain why it works without that 5v supply. I know that 60hz is possible on pal televisions by way of PAL60, hence why I was trying to mod it to run at 60hz http://www.mmmonkey.co.uk/console/nintendo/snes-switches-1.htm This one
Ok fair enough, Also how would I go about widening the cartridge slot without making it look like an escaped mental patient has been attacking it with a file?
I agree, the region +50/60hz mod and a slot extender thingy seems perfectly sufficient to me but I know the guy who owns a retro game shop and he said he would pay me to mod snes systems but only if I could widen the cart slot, I've tried on the system i just semi-killed but it looks dreadful, i might just tell him I can;t do it
I tend to buy US systems (Snes jr mostly) and mod those. The pal carts fit fine and obviously so do NTSC. I am looking at building some boards for 1chip snes's with the crystal (for 50/60hz), supercic + in game reset all in 1
I did look into that but it starts to become too much hassle for the tiny margin I would have to take to sell them on
^^^^That would be handy! I have typically widened the slot on PAL units, it is a shame it looks like ass. Whoops upside down (well I am in Australia). Looks ok with game in. I use black plastic to hide the "sin" (those cheap DVD cases). Oh sweet Jebus.... The flap is still there I am just holding it open. I haven't done the US SNES yet, I believe I have to swap out the oscillator? In a 2 chip PAL console I know I don't have too. Am I correct in saying on the 2 chip model I can just swap out the oscillator, but on the single chip I have to use the original chip as well as a PAL oscillator? I have done a US SNES before, but cheated and used a PAL board. I have 2 US SNES's (original no idea if 1 or 2 chip) as well as a SFC here to mod though. Hey BAD_Ad84, I haven't had a chance to do the switchless mod yet (I got those chips off you a while ago), having a baby recently puts the hobby on hold! *Edit also agree on the chip being pulled up internally, much like Sega Mega Drive's for their 50/60 HZ switch as well as switching for the video encoder between PAL/NTSC.
haha, mine looks much worse than that, if i could do one which looked like that then I would be cool with selling it, might i ask what you used, just a garden variety file or something else?
I use a hacksaw blade (on a small handle) to lob out the side and then a rough file to take a bit out and then finish it with a smooth needle file set I have. Takes a while and is a pain.
