So I picked up an SNES from craigslist along with a crap ton of other things upon looking at it I noticed one thing that concerned me right away, the power port.. Now I haven't seen an SNES in a long time so I wasn't quite sure if this was normal, but upon plugging it in with this 3in1 adapter they provided I noticed very quickly that it was an issue. Not too bad of an issue as I managed to temporarily correct it to see if the thing would work at all. (Note: While posting this I did further research and found the replacement part I need to fix that as well so pretty happy about that. ) Now here comes more trouble I haven't played an SNES since I was maybe 9? But I'm pretty sure swiggly lines/static all over the TV when turning it on with a cartridge in it isn't all that normal. So I did the usual cleaned the cartridge via dirty means of blowing into it (I don't know if this damaged carts or not but I did it any way). So then I was presented with a lovely black screen ( I'm gonna try doing some more cleaning of the cart and the reader ).. But after doing some research online some people say that even after cleaning their SNES never recovered anyone have experience with this issue, what causes it, and how to fix it?... To clarify it powers on and just hits a black screen I haven't tried cleaning yet I'm going to and also going to update the post afterwards as well to let you know how that goes over, kinda disappointing though I saw a good deal I took it and may've ended up with a couple of bricks and made a bad deal. UPDATE: So I cleaned it with a cleaning cartridge thing the guy included, along with cleaning the cartridge I was attempting to use it didn't work. Then I noticed random stuff happening when I was monkeying with it the screen would change a bit so I figured maybe the AV port is broken ( I had already tried another cable then the one I was using at this moment ). So I decided to use an RF thing he included, wound up with static then black screen once again and interference noises when it powers up and down so nothing further then what I already was able to accomplish a black screen. Really upset the guy who sold the lot to me told me there were a few broken things and specified which things were broken but he didn't tell me anything about the SNES being damaged/broken or etc, I also happened to notice there was cosmetic damage near the power adapter port I'm wondering if anything internally is damaged and causing this issue. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Update #2: The guy I bought the lot on told me he'd replace it considering the SNES was the thing I was most interested in out of the lot, so I'm pretty excited there just wonder what the issue is with this one still damn my curiosity.
I'd replace the power jack, Hyperkin makes direct replacements for it or you can replace it with a 5.5 x 2.1 mm jack, the same used in the model 1 Genesis. Also, those 3-in-1 PSUs are complete garbage so I'd suggest switching to a proper one while you're at it.
Still waiting on the generic power adapter I bought from ebay to come in and I seem to somewhat have brought this thing back from the dead, the one still has green lines going down the screen (Still waiting on the official adapter so I can toss that at it and see if it gets rid of that). Then the other SNES where the power jack was messed up, I De-soldered the old one put in the new one soldered the points correctly.. and boom the thing boots again hooray!. Until it gets about 2 seconds into an intro or so and then it resets over and over this has happened on a variety of games From x-men to ren and stimpy, some won't boot at all just sit at the same old black screen... I'm about to grab a tooth brush and some alcohol to scrub down the pins but I've also looked around for replacement pins seems there's not out there that aren't the plug n play version. Any advice on how to continue further repairing this system ( Could the motherboard be dead or is it just dirty pins?, Are these solder(non- plug n play) pins available online?, Should I just throw it away and give up? ) Update: Well, It's still not working cleaned the cart, cleaned the pins on the system with a tooth brush and alcohol to no prevail if anything it seems to have made it worse ( doesn't get as far into the intro before rebooting ).... Any suggestions would be appreciated guys . Also, The strange thing is the one still has green lines while the other which I replaced the power jack on, doesn't even though it only makes it through a few seconds of a game... If another power adapter on it doesn't work I'm contemplating pulling the pins off the green line one and putting them on the rebooting one to see what happens then just dunno if I wanna deal with that much soldering right now and come down to a rebooting SNES again.
I took some additional pics of the board to see if anyone could point anything out... Also, the Chip that screws into the rf shield has a weird ball on it I haven't researched what this chip is but I didn't touch it it was like that when I opened it. http://imageshack.us/g/1/10117176/ Edit: As it just so happens it seems that the issue was with the balled up solder there, after de-soldering the entire thing cleaning up the points where it looks like someone tried replacing the chip or such. Then re-soldering it properly the system seems to work in perfect condition ( Although I can't help but wonder if maybe it was an issuew ith the way the shields or something were during my testing this time I left all the screws, shields, even controller port out so if that turns out to be the issue I'll certainly update the post. I'm just glad no chips/caps were fried that would suck and because I cleaned the connect games just work instantly (At least the clean ones anyways lol ), no blowing in the cartridge and such. Such relief to see this thing actually turn on, now to figure out the green line issue with the other.
Looked like sloppy solder job to me. The ball shouldn't be formed anywhere unless someone put too much directly on the iron, then let it drip into the connection.
My thoughts exactly, someone had no idea wtf they were doing and shouldn't have even opened the thing lol. Anyway, glad to say it's working now! Now to fix this other one with it's green line issue.
