Got me a nice Super Famicom Box (Hotel Unit) recently.
Needless to say, I've already taken many pictures and dumped all unique ROMs on the cartridges that came with the system.
The main unit itself uses security screws.
I wasn't able to find any official designation, but these usually go by the name of "gamebit" or less commonly "external line head".
The common diameter sizes are 3.8mm for SNES cartridges and 4.5mm for most Nintendo consoles, i have a couple of screwdrivers for these.
However, the Super Famicom Box uses bigger ones.
I'd estimate the diameter to be 6.2mm.

Here's a (not so clear) picture. left to right: 3.8mm, 4.5mm, sfcbox screw(the black one)

What's the official name for these and where can I get an appropriate tool?
I've tried making my own with both melted plastic and a modified phillips head screwdriver, but they didn't work so well.
    Any suggestions?

I may be wrong, but this is torx to me... You need a female torx screwdriver to remove them.

"Line head" is the official name of the screws.

Okay, so the official name is indeed "external linehead" and the exact size designations are ALH2 - ALH6.
I've just found one single distributor that sold these, and they are no longer available. =(

Here's a video of the SFC Box, pictures will follow later: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KPj6lG9vsV4

    [Edit]
I've dug a little bit deeper and the official japanese designation for these screwdrivers is DTC. SNES carts use DTC-20, Nintendo consoles use DTC-27 and the Super Famicom Box uses DTC-40.
And it seems like DTC-40 is the only one that is globally discontinued. =(

I've been told that you can take a pen and melt the plastic head to the screw to make an impression. Works for making a makeshift screw driver until the plastic becomes worn out.

I can vouch for that. It's not much fun and you'll go through a few biros, but it'll get you inside.

You could try one of these bits, I think they are easier to find.
