This was dumped from an EPROM cart. It differs from every retail dump I could find, however I did not notice any differences in my limited playthrough.

Heh, this prototype has a long history. It was originally sold on Ebay in 2002 by someone who worked at Wizard Magazine. I had a quick look at the prototype, the internal header has the serial code for Hagane in it. Most of the different area in the binary is full of 0xFF valued bytes, I would expect that it is just garbage data that has no relevance for the game. I'll try to have a closer look this week.

100% correct on the header. Let me dig through my email archive and see if I'm the person that bought it off eBay back then. It's been in a box for a very long time. :)

That Wizard Magazine bit is really stuck in my head now...I remember talking to that person and it's likely I bought off him. Digging through emails but can't locate it yet... Any details on what that "long history" entails?

Long history in that I happen to have that information from 2002. ;) I think the seller's name was ArmyX or something, but my backup discs from that time are in storage on another continent.
