I'm not sure what you are ranting about now. The SNES was fantastic. Honestly I don't recall too many games with slowdown that was annoying. Infact the only two cases of gameplay slowdown I can recall off hand are Gradius 3 with 4 rotating options with the laser powerup. To be fair that's alot of shit on the screen and the slowdown can be understood. The other is I remember Super Ghouls n' Ghosts was supposed to have some bad slowdown. But other than that I can't really say many SNES games suffered badly from slowdown.

So I don't get what you are talking about exactly. Every game is programmed differently and spends time on different things. Slowdowns can happen, the SNES's CPU was not blazing fast. It would have been nice if it were faster, but that's why coprocessors were in mind when they designed it. Perhaps a Game Genie/Sega 32X style adapter with a faster 65816 in it would have allowed more games to benefit but the fact is that 99% of SNES games use the base hardware only and I can't really say I remember massive slowdown issues when I think of the SNES.

Can you name some games that suffer slowdown that you think could have been better? I think that you really like the SNES, I certainly do. I am critical of the CPU's relative slow clock speed only because I think it was a superb system and I think it might have helped a bit.

Also I just remembered Super Castlevania 4 had some slowdowns. However that certainly doesn't make me enjoy that game less as it is one of my favorites.

By the way I have to say I like having you around posting about the SNES. Always nice to have people around that want to talk about the SNES.

I remember Tales of Phantasia with heavy slowdowns in the Fights. But i also remember Rendering Ranger, R2 shows perfect what the SNES can perform .

The Super Nintendo could've had a lot better and more action games.

There are alot of action games though. Again, can you name some games that you think suffer badly from slowdowns? The SNES is probably my favorite console of all time and slowdowns aren't what come to mind when I think of it.

Contra 3 had a couple spots with some minor slowdown, nothing too bad though.

Were there really that many games on the Super Nintendo that had major slowdown? or do people on the web mostly just talk about the worst offenders? I could swear there were a lot of great action games on that system I played when I was little, but some how I can't find a lot of them on the internet?

Is it that I'm only remembering the good stuff, or were there a ton of amazing games that are not usually mentioned online? I could swear the Snes I know now is not the Snes I knew as a 5 year old boy?

I don't usually pick on people for having an opinion but back in the day development tools weren't what you're used to today son

I just played Biometal on my Super Nintendo emulator. Sometimes I forget how fast some Super Nintendo games could be sometimes. I guess society focuses too much on the bad games but not enough on the good games.

I don't like it when people claim "even the best programmers couldn't do it" and then name companies such as Capcom and Konami for having the "best" programmers. I do admit that Konami did become excellent at programming towards the end of the 16-bit era, but Gradius 3 was their first game on the Snes, so it's understandable that they weren't used to the hardware. In my opinion Capcom is one of the most overrated companies of all time. I find their games to be either unnecessary choppy or an unnecessary lack of animation or a combination of the two. I have no idea how they got so much credibility, when so many other developers did such better jobs then them.

Umm, darkangel, are you feeling OK? It's just... well... you started this thread by completely slating the SNES and saying how the system and, by implication, every game suffered from slowdown. You were asked to qualify this statement by naming games with slowdown. Your reply was that there could have been more action games on SNES. Umm, how was that answering the question?! You were then asked again to name some games that suffered. Your reply to this baffled me....

You completely contradicted EVERYTHING you'd already said by questioning if there really were many games that suffered from slowdown, and also said you remember a lot of great action games!!

    Seriously, sonny, are you schizophrenic?

As for finding these games online.....

    www.ebay.com

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_SNES_games

    http://www.digitpress.com/DP/cmf/search.cmf

And if you can't decide whether there were loads of good games, or none because they all suffered from slowdown....

    @dark angel.

Please please please talk about something else. You have at least 5 threads all picking on processors, clock speeds, cycles, rotation, lazy programming, how you are amazing at maths etc and they all seem to be SNES related.

Can't all of this discussion just sit in one thread entitled "Interesting observations of SNES development"

Granted I don't HAVE to read them but to be honest I do enjoy some of the content you provide however many of the threads you make result in you showing how you would have done it better.

    Nobody cares anymore, its 2009.

OK, I see we cross-posted... rather than make my previous post look overly long, I'll post afresh in response to your last post.

Umm, what's that got to do with anything?

OK, there used to be these things called ARCADE MACHINES. Konami were well known for making them. Why? Umm, because they made good games! That must mean they had good programmers, no?

The likes of Scramble, Gyruss, Track & Field, Gradius, Green Beret, Shao-Lin's Road, Yie Ar Kung-Fu, Castlevania, Salamander, WEC LeMans, Contra and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were all made BEFORE the SNES came out in 1990. In fact, by the turn of 1990, Konami had manufactured well over 100 arcade games.

If you want to just talk about SNES games, though, Konami made several good games in the early days - for example, Legend of the Mystical Ninja, Castlevania IV, Dragon's Lair, Parodius, Sunset Riders, Zombies...... Oh, and your example was an arcade port of course, so it wasn't fully programmed just for the SNES. It was also a very early game, if not a launch title. What does that tell us? That Nintendo had confidence in Konami's programmers to want them to be one of their first developers for the console!

You have no idea how they got so much credibility?!?! Again, there was something called ARCADE GAMES. Must I go through this again? OK, here goes....

By the turn of 1990, Capcom had produced nearly 100 games AND made their own arcade system that accepted interchangeable games. That is no mean feat. Games included 1942, Ghosts 'n Goblins, Gun Smoke, Bionic Commando, Street Fighter, Tiger Road, Forgotten Worlds, Ghouls 'n Ghosts, LED Storm, Buster Bros, Final Fight, Strider and U.N. Squadron.

In the 90s, they then released another hardware system that took interchangeable games. If they hadn't got enough credibility already with their quality catalogue and two arcade systems under their belt, one of the games for their original CPS system gave them super credibility and could justifiably be the only thing that need be mentioned to give you an answer as to how they got that credibility....

    STREET FIGHTER II

Seriously, don't comment on systems and companies when you obviously haven't played a large percentage of their games.

Maybe you should read your posts before you make them rather then whinge about them after you post them because someone has made some factually correct comments and you then change your mind about it.

Lots of games had slow down, I am sure you can find examples on the NES/Famicom, Master System/Mark III, Megadrive/Genesis, Mega/Sega CD, PC Engine, Super 32X, 3DO, FM Towns, PC,Saturn, Playstation, etc, etc, etc...
