Hey Guys, recently got a Everdrive MD cart and finally got around giving it a test run on my japanese MD1. Of the first four games tested, two are already not running. Not the best start imagineable. I'm running PCB 2.3, FW 12, OS 21. After successfully running Alien Soldier and Thunderforce IV, I tried Snow Bros. (J) and Vampire Killer (J). Both games start, but show partially garbled graphics. Snow Bros doesn't show the title screen and once the game has started, the backgrounds show ok, but the sprites are corrupted. On Vampire Killer (japanese version of Castlevania). The Text in the game's titlescreen are garbled and once the game has started backgrounds and enemies are fine, but the player sprite is corrupted and so is the status section on top of the screen. I tried various setting like Hard Reset on/off and Region patch on/off and also confirmed the ROMs to be from the GoodGen 3 set. The Set includes a few alternative roms for those games and I tried all of them with the same results. The US version of Castlevania won't start (only shows a Konami logo), since the region patch obviously doesn't work on this game. If somebody would be so kind to give those two games a try - any hints on what I'm doing wrong are highly appreciated Thanks !
try this test, it should detect problem if something wrong with your cart. for be assured you should reflash and run few times you use japanese system?
Pannolino: thanks for trying ! When you're refering to "in any region", did you actually try other Castlevania Roms than the one matching your hardware region ? I can only start the japanese Rom, the others won't show a title screen, but only a Konami logo and nothing else after that. Igor: thanks for the quick reply! I tried the test rom and it seems to do ok. I just see three lines (ram test..., rom test..., success!). I have re-flashed the test rom 5 or 6 times now and it seems fine every time. Still no luck with the roms though, I also tried a bunch of others and about 50% don't work properly. Ristar for example is fine, while Outrunners only shows a completely scrambled screen when running. Yes, I'm using a japanese MD1 (without region mod) and a japanese MCD2. All the original carts (and CDs) I have run fine without any problems. It's a newer revision of the MD1, the one with the licensing screen showing up before every game start. Do you think the japanese MD1 is to blame ?? I can send the Everdrive cart to a friend who also has a japanese MD (but an older one without the licensing info up front).
I did. "0 files converted" They are from the GoodGen 3 set which Igor recommended anyway and which should be fine without any further converting. Thanks for the input though. I'll just wait for Krikzz reply if the MD could be to blame and then I'll try the Everdrive on one or two different MD/Gen units.
try to make full format of sd card on your PC, then put only one rom (one of those games which does not work properly) and try to play. i gues that sometimes problem can be if files fragmentation. also try to use cart on some other console if it possible. i will replace your cart if glitches will not go away
Thanks again! Tried full format, put only a single rom onto the card. Still the same problems I also updated the OS to v22, but the problems remain. I will send the Everdrive MD to a friend today to test it on his Mega Drive. I will report back as soon as possible ! Might take 2 or 3 days...
Very weird. The scrambled tiles at the top of the screen could be explained by a corrupted ROM in Flash but the way the main sprite is fucked up seems to indicate console hardware issue . It seems like sprite rendering is partially disabled or at least pixel color not read properly... What I know is that there are some undocumented VDP test ports (mapped at $C0001C-$C0001F), that can affect the way screen (planes, sprites, etc) is rendered. I don't think Everdrive OS is writing these but maybe something else it does (or doesn't) on startup could affect the display under specific conditions and on specific models...
my MD is PAL and it has 50/60 and region selector, i think is a similar revision because i got the license screen too. so for "any region", yes i did mean every region of the game (sorry but i m not english , sometimes my flow get screwd up  ) so while SnowBros it's multi region itself even the western roms of Vampire Killer work without problem.
Is it possible your cartridge port is dirty? Have you tried putting the Cartridge in but *not* pressing it all the way down in the port. Let it sit like a millimeter or two higher than all the way down.
@Mottzilla: I cleaned the cartridge slot and also tried not to insert the everdrive cart 100%. Still the same effect. @KRIKzz: the cart arrived at my friend's house today and he already gave it a try on one of his Mega Drives (a 60Hz modded PAL machine) and guess what - the Everdrive's working flawlessly !! So, it's my MD after all (which is still extremely weird since a few dozen original carts work fine and so do a bunch CD games I have). Anyway, thanks for the great support so far. I will now look out for a new Mega Drive and hopefully report back with good news once it has arrived.
by the way, try to enable genny3 mode option, it may help. by some reasons some systems works stabe only if genny3 mode enable. i have md2-asia-pal, md2 euro, md1 euro, genesis2 us, some clones, and everywhere works fine with dissabled genny3 mode, but by feedbacks i know that some systems work only with enabled "genny3 mode" option
Tried the Genny3 mode as well, didn't help. I might try a Multimega instead now, but I have a question: if I have a PAL Multimega/CDX and have it modded with a region switch and 50/60Hz mod for CARTRIDGE games only (no CD Bios exchanged), can I somehow play import (japanese or american) CD games using the v2.3 Everdrive ?
You can load the US CDX bios or JPN CD2 bios on your multimega via the Everdrive. Some games have region protection while playing the game so some will load fine then freeze. I know that's true for some JPN games, but I don't know if any US games had that kind of in game region check.
