So, how many games do you think are in a certain series?

One thing that I have been curious about is how many games a series has (Not counting package re-releases with no updates or changes to the core game, but counting special package deals). For example (Thanks to Dot50Cal for this info): Resident Evil/Biohazard has a little more then 140 games and counting. Here is another one, the Metal Gear series (Not counting MGS4 and MPO)

Note that this list only includes games, interactive movies (TDoMGS2 and DGN) and package deals and not repackaging (Playstation 2 the Best, Greatest Hits, etc)

MSX Metal Gear: Japan and PAL (2)
MSX Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake: Japan only (1)
NES Metal Gear: US and Japan (2)
C64 Metal Gear: Not sure, think it is PAL for now, not sure about US
NES Snake's Revenge: US and PAL (Even though it isn't canon, it is still a game in the series) (2)
PS Metal Gear Solid: All 3 (3)
PC Metal Gear Solid: All 3 (3)
Premium Package (Silver Edition)MGS: Japan (1)
Premium Package (Gold Edition)MGS: Japan (1)
Premium Package MGS (Europe version): PAL (1)
Metal Gear Solid Intergral: Japan (1)
MGS: VR Missions/Special Missions: PAL and America (2)
Bleem for MGS: US Only (1)
Metal Gear Solid 2 SOL: All 3 (3)
    Premium Package MGS2: Japan (1)
XBox MGS2 Substance: PAL and America (2)
PC MGS2 Substance: PAL and America (2)
    PS2 MGS2 Substance: All 3 (3)
The Document of Metal Gear Solid 2: All 3 (3)
    MGS TTS: All 3 (3)
Premium Package MGS: TTS (comes with Emulated NES version of Japanese MG): Japan Only (1)
    MGS3 SE: All 3 (3)
Premium Package MGS3: Japan only (1)
Platnium reissue MGS3 (Comes with MG Saga Vol 1): Germany only (1)
    MGS3 Subsistence: All 3 (3)
Special Edition MGS3 Subsistence: Japan Only (1)
Special Edition MGS3S with Mic: Japan only (1)
MGS3S Limited Edition: US only (1)
Cellphone MSX Metal Gear: Japan only (1)
Cellphone MG 2 Solid Snake: Japan Only (1)
Metal Gear Acid: All 3 (3)
    Metal Gear Acid 2: All 3 (3)
MGS Digital Graphic Novel: US and PAL at this point, Japan later (2 for now, 3 later)
    Metal Gear Solid/Ghost Babel: All 3 (3)

    60 Total

Personally, I would love to see how many games the following series has:

    -FIFA
-Any Mario game (Not counting Wario Ware series)
    -Castlevania
    -Final Fantasy
    -Mega Man
    -Dynasty Warriors

Anyone want to help out and see how many games some series have created over the years?

Edit: For those of you curious so far how each list currently stacks against each other, here is the counts in order of ammount:

    Street Fighter: 154
    Resident Evil/Biohazard: 140+
    Madden NFL: 140
    Zelda: 67-71
    Metal Gear: 60-61+

Well, there are 60 games total with Mega Man series in total (Not counting regions and demos, but the classic, X, Legends, ZX, Zero, and Network series. Don't remember if I counted the collections or not). So, i'm guessing it would be around 200 for Mega Man, give or take.

Good lord. Thats still a ton.

Does Mario still hold the title as having the most games or has that gone title gone to Megaman already?

Eh, I may try to do a count later tonight. I think it all depends on if we count side games (RPGs, sports titles, kart racers, party games, learning games, etc). If it is the core platformers, then I doubt it. If it is all the others, then there is a good chance, if FIFA and Madden don't get higher.

Well, here is Madden. Surprisingly, it didn't break Mega Man, and it is around the same as RE for now. FIFA may score a bit higher, since it is more international then Madden is...

    Fun Facts:
-There were 10 Japanese versions released in total, and 29 PAL versions. Japan didn't see a Madden game since Madden '94 (So 1993) until 2001 when EA decided to whore itself out to a larger audience with the PS2. It seems to be on and off since then

-Longest Madden lifespan was 9 years with the Playstation, and lowest with 2 NFL games was the Saturn at only 2 years.

-What is even more odd is how EA reacted to Sega. The Genesis has the 4th largest ammount of games, while Saturn is near the bottom, while the Dreamcast has zilch (Competition from Sega Sports?). Maybe that is one of the nails in the coffin with the Dreamcast, the only major system without the whoring of Madden.

-Keep in mind that the (Modern) PC, Xbox, GCN, and PS2 versions are pretty much ports of each other, meaning that EA is making even more now by simply porting shit over to other consoles.

-'05 and '06 are the largest years EA pumped out Madden games, at 17 each. Lowest is both '94 and '99 at 3 each.

-This list does not include demos, which would add quite a bit as well...

-This list is ironic, since I hate madden with a passion. I just wanted to see how much crap EA has been able to produce in the last decade+. Now you see why EA is
such a industry whore: it makes nearly 10 versions on average a year with no competition...God, I sort of hate EA more now.

heh, this sure is a broad subject to boot with. EA is doing business , it's the people who actually like sports simulators that need to be corrected (lack of a more appropriate word). Simulations on things one can do in everyday life suck. (that could exclude flight simulators as most of us don't get to pilot a plane - ever), sports simulators are just dumb.go do the real thing and stop being lazy for a change if you're such a big *insert sport* fan.

    Really interesting stuff, thanks jasonkhowell.

I'd have thought the Street Fighter series could give Madden a run for its money, what with all the different regional versions and minor game revisions.

Good thinking! I'll do a list either tonight or tomorrow for Street Fighter.

Edit: OH SWEET MERCIFUL GOD! How the hell did I avoid all these damn special editions? I made jokes about Capcom always making revamps, but this proves it: They are the kings of rehashes. No one else can top them, even if Kojima makes 20 versions of MGS3 with small changes here and there...

OK, here is Street Fighter. Few notes:

-I honestly have no idea if this is 100% all the games or not. I did the best I could on finding different versions, and I didn't even include special packages, so I am sure it is a bit higher if you include packaging.

-This pretty much includes all the games with Street Fighter in the name, and not any of the "Capcom V.S." titles, or Cameo games.

-The seperators are not in any order, and more for keeping track of count.

-Any Assembler member who can get all these versions has my respect. Hell, i'll even mail you $10 bucks if you do already have these games...Hell, it beat Madden so far...

I'm not sure you should include the hacks, since they were not official games.

XMen Vs Streetfighter on the PlayStation were an "EX" version and different from the original game, same with Marvel Vs Streetfighter.

    You could also add:
Pocket Fighter/Super Gem Fighter Mini-mix, since it was a street fighter game by rights.

Would the Capcom vs SNK series count?

Off the top of my head there was also a "Championship" edition of SF2, and a "Super Street Fighter 2" for Megadrive, a Tectoy SMS game (can't remember the exact title), the DC got a port of SFA3 (also got Double Impact version of SF3), the SNES weirdly got a port of SFA2... might want to add those games-in-a-pad things, there've been Street Fighter versions of those... There's so many of them! It's a pretty impressive list, too, thanks again for your time Jason.

if you count versions as different games/products, then megaman is nearly unbeatlable. That thing is everywhere, while mario is nintendo only.

Since '96, 75 Megaman games have been released, whereas Mario is under 60.

Is their really enough of a fanbase for all these megaman games to sell? And hasn't Capcom heard of oversaturation?

Yeah, keep in mind that I have not played many of these versions, so I do not know if they are just repackaged names or not. Anywho, yeah, I forgot about the puzzle ones...Should add those in.

I'll take a look at those later. Keep in mind that I did this at 5:00 in the morning with little sleep, so I figured that there would be some left out/mistakes. Only problem with the bundles (Such as home arcade sticks, etc) is they are somewhat hard to find a complete list of all the special promotions for SF (Which I am sure is quite a few).

Capcom are the kings of oversaturation.

Too bad they didnt make any more Mega Man Legends, though.

OK, I updated SF by adding Puzzle Fighter, DC versions of SF and the SMS version of SFII (Couldn't find the championship edition or the other SF game for the SMS, though. Anyone have a link to info on that?). Also took out Playstation versions of X-men/Marvel Super Heroes V.S. Street Fighter.

Anywho, on the note of the Legends series, they did port it to the PSP, but Capcom of America apperantly wants to hold off on it, or not release it at all. You would think they would port it to America and Europe after their major porting spree a few months ago...

OK, here is Zelda. I'm pretty accurate on this one, although I may need some help from PAL regions on some of the editions they got. I know there were a few packages for the NES that were different, which is pretty much the only area of Zelda I am pretty gray in.

*Note: There are two different versions of packaging, if I remember correctly. The
no ESRB rating, and the K-A ESRB version.

**Note: There are three versions for the N64, 1.0, 1.1, and 1.2. There is also
reports of a 4th version (Grey cartriage with red blood), but I am not sure.

***Note: If I remember correctly, there was a gold version in the PAL regions and a
    standard grey cart as well...

As for Metal Gear for the C64...Hmm, that must be pretty rare. Was it a port of the NES version, or the MSX version?
