I ran OSX for over 2 years without reinstalling or anything and I did not observe any loss in performance or bootup time even though my hard drive was pretty much full.

My old XP computer was so slow in the end (compared to the beginning) that it would take around 5 minutes until it's all booted up although I kept the harddrive completely empty except for the operating system.

Oh, and did I mention that in the 3 years that I'm using Apple computers, I experienced only 2 freezes (requiring me to cold-reboot)? I had to do that about every day on my Windows PC. Just my observation.... I know there are reasons (trade-off of benefits) why Windows is more likely to crash, but since I don't game, code or program on my computer, why should I bother that shit? The time I used Windows XP cost me more nerves than puberty and post-natal trauma together... fuck that! :p I won't use it again unless somebody forces me... I'm not a masochist. Just because some jerks call Apple-users hipsters doesn't make me force myself to switch to a product that is inferior for my purposes.

I have had my crap box desktop running 7 64 bit Ultimate for like 6 months now. No re-install needed and it stays on 24/7 except during power losses (I do have a big backup battery but I try to save the power to keep the net running and move to lappy...) and Windows Updates.

    Now my laptop...

Let's just say it's on its 4th HDD and 8th install...

    It's under a year old...

Same OS as desktop: 7 64 bit Ultimate.

I usually keep the OS and all the crapware on the same partition. My data and all the important stuff is elsewhere. So when i want to reinstall, i always format the windows partition and i make a clean reinstall. I dont usually reinstall all the time. My current Windows 7 install is about 2 years old, still doing pretty well. I have some browser issues with youtube but i blame firefox.

pfff hipsters, lol, im not a zomwtf mac suckzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz windozzzzzz rulzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz fanboy

i just genuinely never liked mac os, just doesn't feel right for me. its simply personal preference and what i use my computers for. which is gaming, music, audio editing video transcoding and conversion, gaming, internet, movies and media in general, and interfacing with blackberry / other phones and whatever else i get into coding and photowork although i've not coded in many years now, oh and did i mention gaming? both retro and current.

so i use linux as a main os, 2 distros
and windows 7 as secondary os, for whatever linux wont run or wont run well.

i have a project planned to build a modern pc inside of a imac and a custom mini pc inside a ibook you know the old clamshell ones. just because they look cool in a geeky way :) i always liked the look of them. don't ask me why but they're just so 90s and 90s is my fav decade / period.

So far so good, of all the times I've installed 7 it's never ran this fast or this light.

I would love to try an On CD distro of linux sometime. I just dread having to get a computer with Windows 8 on it.

We had that exact same problem it took 5 mins eventually to boot up XP just before I got this laptop I used it for Playstation Emulation and tenchu was running SLOOOOOOOOOOW.

    Comparitivly on this computer

Vista when I first got it boot time was 45 seconds

    7- 30-45 seconds

7 Ultimate first few installs- 45sec

    last install- 1 min

    this install 20 Seconds

I somehow I have no idea how managed to actually REDUCE boot time.

I had another issue when I was trying to install updates, there were 44 updates needed to install and it was trying or installing the 4th for over an hour... now it did say don't unplug or power off...

I unplugged and powered off anyway and it was running just fine after...although that was when any program I would install wouldn't stick.

Nobody has to butter what they say, we are speaking from personal experience, and when someone bad mouths Macs it seems you are quick to defend. If anything, your buttering the fuck outta Apple.

Have been using Windows 7 with my latest rig, and haven't had a single problem for 2 years now, and I use it daily.

I have used a plethora of Mac/Windows OS's throughout my life so far, and have had many problems with both sides, I prefer PC's due to many programs being developed solely for it, more user made programs and tools, and just overall general feel. Have nothing against those who prefer Mac/PC over one or the other, I have problems with people who defend a product over another product and care about the company as if it were their friend.

I guess I stick to Windows PC since that is what I was raised on. We're talking about my first dabbling with a PC back in 1994 when Windows was still a front for DOS programs. I loved playing classics like Rodent's Revenge, Chip's Challenge, ect.

Guess I have brand loyalty issues...

But in my defense I've been toying with the idea of installing Android x86 patch on a separate partition but there's no patches for AMD APU systems...

Mac OS is just too simple and watered down for me to use. I feel like an idiot trying to use their OS since it's too simple.

Thats not true, theres a full unix OS under there you can use too and ignore all the bells and whistles, which can be frustratingly complex to do trivial things.

I am a Windows guy (but also Mac trained and certified). I do not use OSX because it doesnt work for what I want (as described above, most user apps are windows also my expensive programmer is windows only). So I use what works for me, which is what everyone should do.

That said, people who say OSX doesn't have problems are full of it - I have broken it no end of times, also Apple have a tendency not to fix things until the next paid upgrade - which if Microsoft did, people would freak the fuck out. On one of my training course there was no end of errata that they had to say it will be fixed in Lion. Some of it stupid stuff that could be fixed easily - like input boxes vanishing when you maximize Workgroup manager? If microsoft left that in Active Directory in Server 2008 until you upgraded to 2012, people would lynch them.

Anyways, everything has its faults - use what works for you. People seem to treat OS's like religion and try to convert you.

It's how I view Mac OS. I know it has professional use just like any OS... I hated using it when I was studying but they were setup poorly.

Mac OS X has problems, sure. I think any sufficiently large and complicated piece of software like an OS is bound to have problems. I just think OS X generally has fewer, and less severe, problems than Windows. That's just my experience.

Back to the original topic, I'm having problems with my Windows installation too. I barely use the fucking thing - I use it for gaming and that's about it. And yet I still somehow managed to get some sort of spyware shit on it. But it's just as well, since I'm going to have to reinstall Windows in the near future anyway, when I upgrade my computer.

I don´t know what some people are doing with their computers, but i never reinstall any os.

I´m running my macbook on the same snow leopard installation since its release. i even cloned this install to my new ssd earlier this year.
The same goes with the windows 7 and debian installations on my desktop machine. I even had not to reinstall when i upgraded my desktop machine from a core2duo to a i5. I booted up win 7 and debian and upgraded the drivers and everything worked fine. No slow downs, no blue screens / kernel panics, nothing.

I only reinstall when a hard drive crashes or i catch a trojan (this happened the last time in 2008 i think).... and when i put a ssd in my desktop beacause i could not clone the current windows partition because the partition table was corrupted. :)-) )

I think the main problems of windows problems is the use of "clean up" / "speed up" - utilities and software from fishy sources.

I reformatted every weekend for a month as a experiment back in 2007. Kept all my stuff on a external.

Nowadays I probably reformat every four months or when I break something. I dislike how Windows completely shits the bed when you install new hardware though.

I had a Windows 98 install go a full 6 years before I did something dumb and killed it. Still booted into Safe Mode but I couldn't remove the offending program in Safe Mode and it wouldn't load up normally without freezing so I was screwed.

My desktop has an XP install going on 4 years this last September. My laptop would have a 2 year old Windows 7 install until I had a virus trash something. So unless you're running a version of OSX that Apple doesn't sell or offer support anymore your uptime doesn't mean much to me. Somewhere I've got a 2k install that I used regularly for years until I replaced the machine entirely

That said I've got two old Macs running OS7 that has their original installs because they're never turned on.

    Let me make a list:
LInux works with almost all hardware in my experience.
When making a custom high powered computer to run mac you need to play it by a compatibility book. Some sound card and video cards won't work with mac.
    Mac is simple and brainless.
If building a custom computer to save yourself grief use windows or linux.
Windows lags and breaks down too much.
Lets say we rally to hate a company that deals with design of both hardware and software. Which isn't a bad thing (less bugs).
Alas, most cases suggest people are loyal to one side or the other.
Crazy if you want to work hard for the same result and spend more time on one computer based chore ,, thats your choice. It is painfully obvious you are not easily influenced which is a good thing.

    This.
