    as the title says.
i got a PAL 60Gb launch unit that seems to have dropped dead.

the system itself runs perfectly fine and whatnot.... until you launch a game, from disk or from HDD.
From disk you can maybe get the game (any game) to run for a minute or so until it just freezes up and eventually gives you a black screen, and from HDD, the rig freezes instantly when you launch a game. (enters to black screen and stays there until you power it off)

    - the drive might be faulty, as i have no means to actually test if it's or isn't
    - the HDD is fine.
    - the rig has once shut itself donw after blinking the overheat warning, and worked fine for some 4 months after that.

it gives no YLOD, no errors, no nothing, just freezes.

    any ideas ?

so you think it's overheating by dust ?

somehow i fail to believe it's overheating as it doesn't blink the heat warnings and doesn't freeze up on videos or anything else than games as far as i tested it.

thanks for the tip though, i'll open it up and do some cleaning tomorrow :)

No need to take apart the ps3 to clean it just get a air compresser and i does it every month or so.

It may be the dust. I wasn't sure if it was overheating. I just went in there to clean the laser and did the cleaning of the dust too.

Turn it completly off (switch on the back) and hold the eject button. Then turn it back on. It'ill blow almost anything out of itself. :p

The fan test doesn't exist in (europe) launch units.
also, as stated, i already took it apart and cleaned it.
    No effect whatsoever :/

something else is broken there and im having diffuculties figuring it out so i guess i'll just let it sit there for now..

sending it to sony is out of the question as this unit contains something i don't care for them to see.
