Someone set up an automated check on a sale thread.

Result is 840,000 hits on the site.

I'm still trying to decide how to handle this and penalties

Ah, well if it were me and my poor little website I'd warn them (if possible).
Failure to comply would result in a blacklist of the IP to stop it.
Couldn't one just subscribe to the thread in question anyway with instant email notification?

I'd say a week ban and an explanation why they were banned so they don't do it again. Repeated offense is a lifetime ban.

    And that's why I'm not a mod! :wink-new:

Why would Opera have a feature like that? And so easily accessible! If only Safari had "View Source" nice and easy like it used to.

    Banning by ip is useless.

Most threads are viewable when logged out, so banning by username is also useless as you dont even need to be logged in.

Could make the sales thread non-browsable for guests, not like guests can post.

That would be extremely sensible and help with the issue.

Can the site or the forum be scripted that if there are multiple reload from the same source within the specific time limit (say 5 times or more in 10 minutes), it sends false no change information leaving the user wondering if the site died.

If the origin IP address can be traced and the person refuses to stop, maybe report them for DDOS type attack?

Why the hell would you need to check a sale thread that often? What's wrong with just subscribing to the thread?!

It doesn't really matter IMHO. You could just use Java + Selenium and automate it without much additional effort.
