And I bought it off a friend who I know didn't keep the receipt; but got it back in october. So what the hell do I do now, i've yet to contact microsoft yet...

The serial number should suffice. If not, make up a receipt.

    MS's warranty should cover you..

and I don't think the 360 is a pos at all, mine is working great. Even if it does break, I've got the best buy warranty.

yea, sticker is intact; don't get me wrong, i love the 360 but it definitely pissed me off when trying to get it too work. It ran fine for about 1/2 hour afterwards here, maybe it was just a fluke, unless it starts doing it again i'm just going to keep my fingers crossed.

Hope it doesn't but that is exactly what happen to mine a few weeks ago and I now have a replacement. Hopefully the new revision sorts this mess out. They should work out the reliability issues before adding bigger HDD and HDMI imo.

More than likely that extended warrenty doesn't cover what's considered "normal wear and tear". After a years use and it fails they will be quick to pull that one on you.

I wonder how much money MS is losing with all these broken units...

A lot probably, considering they have now extended their waranty to 1 year.

Wow! You would almost think that it would have been cheaper to make a quality piece of hardware in the first place. ;-)

After losing so much on the first Xbox I think there must have been massive pressure to keep hardware costs down. Obviously this hasn't paid off in the end, but at least MS have the price cut in chips.

They've ended their contract with one manufacturer - perhaps this realiability problem was the reason?
