I laugh because...Nintendo have never been ones to listen to what people want. IF they did we'd have another F-Zero and the entire Mother Series translated by now. The Wii U would have a much sleeker controller and they'd have Online that doesn't suck. But apprently that isn't stoping some from thinking Nintendo will do as Sony and now Microsoft are doing and that's making Region locking a thing of the past. it'd be great if Nintendo listened but this is a company that historicaly has it's head so far up it's ass it can see the light out of it's mouth. http://www.destructoid.com/gamers-campaign-to-end-wii-u-region-locking-256868.phtml
Personally, I don't like region locking, however it is still important to keep (especially for Nintendo). I say this because Nintendo has a lot of game franchises that they exclusively own. When a game never receives a localization, it makes sence for people to import it. However, if a game, like Pokemon or F-Zero, is planed to release internationally, many impatient fans will begin buying the games from other regions. What this does is effect sales charts leading Nintendo to believe that the game is only popular in Japan, and in places like Europe and the US it isn't popular (when really it is just importing games). Companies like SONY and Microsoft have far less franchises to worry about and monitor, therefore, making region free a plausible concept. I do hope that when a replacement to the 3DS and Wii U eventually come, that Nintendo will send a firmware update to the consoles a month or so before they are discontinued allowing region free (or at least making the backwards compatibility of the new console play without the region lock). If the Wii U sales don't pick up, I would imagine this being a possible encouragement, but I don't think it will come down to that so easily
It isn't the amount of money, but the sales from the region. Lets use a recent game like New Super Mario Brothers U as an example. If 20% of the Mario fanbase in the USA purchase the game early from Japan, then Nintendo's sales coming from the USA appear down. Because of this, Nintendo would decide that NSMBU was not popular enough in the USA to have ever bothered localizing it. Because of this when the NSMBU games 2 through 50 come out, Nintendo won't bother localizing the game because they believe that no one in the area cares about it. This is why region locking was invented. There are games that sometimes don't get localized, and of course, it would be nice to be able to play it. Like I said, I don't like region locking. All I am saying is why it was created in the first place and why, unlike SONY and Microsoft, Nintendo would be and is more hesitant to remove it.
Region locking on portable consoles is just stupid. I guess people feel empowered now with the Xbox One. But as GodofHardcore says, good luck in getting Nintendo to listen to them. Nintendo only cares about Nintendo.
Hi Ave, I've missed you, 7force wasn't quite as good at pissing me off as you are. Nintendo is this great consumer friendly company, they all said. that when the DRM Rumors were ongoing Nintendo were the good guys but we all forget.... Nintendo are the real dick bags of the industry. If not for their assholery though we wouldn't have a Playstation. But I think because Nintendo is so beloved as a company gamers are faster to forgive them for past mistakes than they are other companies. Reguardless of others are saying, there is no logical argument for region locking anymore. Only a small percentage actually import and it isn't going to hurt sales of something domestic either way. Well maybe there is the arguement for region locking Persona 4 Arena was, sound only Europe still got fucked up on the ass on that one too they're still waiting for the game I believe. But Japan didn't want the US version being reverse imported for cheaper or something. Actually now that I spell that out, that's still a big fuck you to everyone.
Nintendo never listens to fans, ever. In all the years I've been paying attention I can't remember a single time when they listened to their fan base about anything, and they only barely listen to Developers/Publishers (hence one of the reasons no one likes working with them except a few privileged studios). And I really doubt that will ever change. Edit: Actually, NOE does seem to be trying a little bit harder these days (they did localize the Op. Rainfall titles), but they don't seem to have much influence over the company as a whole either.
Nintendo is going to get whats coming to them this gen I have a feeling. If they don't listen to their fanbase, then we're going to see a mass exodus that or the Wii U will be everyone's Secondary console. I haven't forgotten about their treatment of 3rd Parties in the 80s, Their lawsuit heavy tatics in the early 90s, their censorship in the 16 bit Era and so on. We call microsoft assholes for what they almost did with the XBOX One but at least they LISTENED to the backlash. And lets remember I think I may have just said this. We wouldn't even have a playstation brand if Nintendo didn't tell Sony to go fuck themselves behind their back, Not even to their face, but behind their back.
Sonic Team listens to fans. That's how we got such great classics like Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) and Shadow the Hedgehog. Nintendo probably should listen to there fans more, but for the most part, they know what most of there fans want more then they actually do. If they listen, it will probably be a lot less impressive than people might expect it to be. BTW, I am just speaking for Nintendo to give there side of the argument. Nintendo probably does need to listen to their fanbase more often.
But then Sonic team gave us Generations..... I also liked Shadow, I may be the minority on that one though. Ironically I had it for Gamecube.
I'm not really sure how listening to the fans resulted in Sonic06? But yea Shadow was a direct response to fans call for a more dark and gritty game in the series. When it comes to game design, I agree, don't take advise from the fans. But when it comes to localizations, console features, and (to some minor extent) policy, they shouldn't be burying their head in the sand. Region locking on consoles is one thing, but doing it to a handheld (whose sole primary reason for existing is to use during travel) was just a complete dick move on their part, simple as that.
You are right. Like I said, it can help to listen to your fans at times. I do feel that Nintendo knows what there doing though, even if we don't think they are. For instance, Nintendo is helping Sonic team create the upcoming Nintendo exclusive "Sonic Lost Worlds." From what I have seen, the Genesis like terrain and enemies in an open area that allows for both speed and exploration. It is still early to tell, but that game looks great when compared to most other recent entries in the series (not including Generations). I could be wrong though.
This. Region locking isn't just about price fixing, it's also about distribution rights. A game like Makai Kingdom was published in Japan & NA by NIS, but it was published in Europe by Koei. I'm sure Koei wouldn't like people importing the game into Europe. They have legal & fiscal interests to protect.
