I'm under the impression that if I want the best 8bit NES experience I should get a Famicom either an AV modded original Hard Wired Famicom or an AV Famicom that is basically the NES Model 2. After that it gets a bit sketchy there are 1000s of Famicom clones out there, some use their own original controlles, some take NES controllers. Some Play NES games only others only play Famicom games. So for the sake of discussion what is the best Famiclone? From what I've read and heard on You Tube it's the Super Retro Trio, it plays flash carts, Pirate cards, Unlicensed carts, Pal Carts, Homebrew carts and nobody has complained about the Genesis and SNES end of the system. There's also the Famulator the deck of cards sized Famiclone I hear is pretty good. I'm also pretty much under the impression everything from Hyperkin is a hot steaming pile of shit. So if the original hardware isn't an option say for space reasons, what is the best clone out there?
I so want one of those the only thing keeping me from geting one is that it doesn't support S-Video and it's insanely expensive.
If you want S-Video from a NES/Famicom you'll need any actual original system and a modification installed. Otherwise emulation is the best bet to get better picture quality. Emulation really does sound like it would suit you better.
If I was going the clone via SNES/Super Famicom route I mean that I'd need S-Video and the Super 8 doesn't support that. Then again either does the Super Retro adapter.
you could always get the analogue NT :stupid: If space is really an issue, there are handheld famiclones with a built in screen & A/V out. Mine has crappy audio though, so I won't suggest my particular model! I've heard good things about the Hamy (and it's $26 shipped to the us on DX!). It's only 1 player though This might be one of the few use cases for a retron, if you are also looking to replace a SNES, MD, etc. In that case, why not just get a small computer (with s video or hdmi out) and play teh roms? you'll have the added benefit of not wearing out your games
emu or a modded original is what you're going to need (or the analog NT...TBH...) most clones don't do anything except RF and composite
You mean ALL clones? I am not aware of any clone that does anything besides composite. I am currently investigating the FC-DUAL New by GameJoy. Seems it is a good one. But information is lacking.
Like I'm spending $500 on that thing. I'm leaning towards a modded original and then getting a Super Retro Trio for everything this. Then I'll just upscale everything when I get a new TV with a Framemister or something.
Wow. The New FC Dual has some mediocre reviews on Amazon. Why is it so hard to find a freakin' Famiclone in the United States?
Do you mean Amazon.co.jp ? I looked at the translations and it does not seem TOO bad. Most of the bad reviews are because the units broke or arived DOA, not because of compatibility. I think the old famiclones that were being made decades ago are still being made inside NOAC globtops. The chinese wont bother invent new NOACs from scratch when they can still sell the old ones.
I'm sure some of the ones that weren't NOACs could probably be modded since they used the same hardware as the original typically.
Yeah when I said famiclone I meant a famiclone. The some 70 shit zillion clones in Asia that seem to play everything.
Even the original Famicom did not do anything but composite and RF. The latest RGB nes mod is a pretty hardcore add-on. You should see it as a hardware upgrade and not a simple mod. In that regard, no famicom NES or clone can do anything but RF or Composite. Except the Famicom Titler which came with an arcade PPU built in. But yes, I guess that some of those, presumably older, famiclones that had discrete parts instead of a Single NOAC could potentially be upgraded to output RGB. But afaik, no clone ever did it natively.
The key here would be, how much are you willing to spend? If you go cheap, you'll get cheap. If you go expensive, you'll get more quality. Otherwise, you'll be stuck doing the regular routes as the kind of Famiclones your looking for are rare and much harder to come by. For example, I have a Cosmos Game Engine (Discrete Famiclone) I might be willing to part with: It comes with power adapter, and In addition to being modeled after the Super Famicom, this system has several upgrades done to it: - This is not a NOAC. It has discrete clone parts and is NTSC compatible. - CPU and PPU have been replaced with *real* Famicom chips. (Akumajō Densetsu works great!) - Video circuitry has been upgraded to have cleaner picture so composite output is as clean as possible. Thing is, the console itself (even without mods) is super rare. Unless your willing to spend a bit, most people won't sell such an obscure items for cheap.
Probably more than official top loader NES because it's rare and obscure plus it works great like the real ones.
I would probably ask $139 for it if someone really wanted it from me. Otherwise, I wouldn't consider selling to be honest. But that's just my subjective opinion.
