Whatever happened to the Wasabi360 ODE, like the last update on their site was from 8-11-2012!

I purchased one of these when they came out (a very good product, works fine on live [if you use clean iso's], nice and fast).
Only one update came out, that was the DvD menu, the Devs kept saying that they were bringing ripping support ect. BUUUT 2 years later..NOTHING!?

IS the modding scene in general, dying?

Seems less and less products come out each year, like the whole idea of a simple modchip is history. Nowadays it's just soft-mods (eeeww) playing cat and mouse with software updates (although this was an issue with chips also but not so much)....

Xbox Scene is DEAD and Gone :( But it's odd, they (Xbox-scene.com) still post news on the main page, usually old news. The forum has been 404 for over a year now.
The FB account for the site sometimes posts links to XS, which are always broken.

PS3-Scene (the XS spin off) never really made it off the ground, full of broken links ect.

Is the scene on death row? Seems the gaming scene in general is dying :( All this crap with YouTube (who only seem to favor big channels). Try searching for any retro stuff on ebay, be bombarded with overpriced games posted with "retro" or "Vintage" in the title and my favorite "rare".... Put that something is "rare" instantly adds to the value, since when the hell was mario and duck hunt rare?! or worth $300?? (On a local swap group on FB). Also all that VGA crap on there (ebay), "ooo lets wrap in plastic and put a shiny sticker on it" ... "Now it's worth oneeeemillion dollarrrrssssszz!!!11"..

Please move to general (just realized this half way through typing..my bad)

one of the reasons most people were interested in modding (behind the scene) was because you can add functionality that wasnt their before to a device you had purchased and use it for something else, obviously you get the pirates as well but since theirs a whole host of new devices for people to do with what they want (think Raspberry Pi etc.) then i guess the idea of homebrew etc. on closed consoles isnt worth the hassle or expense anymore, plus its getting harder each time with all the security enhancements, always online etc.

shame tho, i always enjoyed seeing what people would come up with next

I can't speak for the rest of your post, but I feel that I should say something about this:

I believe that this change cannot be avoided because the console manufacturers have changed from hardware-based DRMs to software-based DRMs. Not only that, but it's easier and cheaper to push out a software mod to the public because it will cost nothing as much and should be reversible too. Hardware mods cannot be installed by everybody too - not everybody is sufficiently good at a soldering iron.

In the past, most consoles only had ROMs (either in a ROM chip or a mask ROM, but they still use ROMs). Since there's no way to rewrite/overwrite/disable the DRM through flashing, they created chips to trick the processor(s) instead.
Likewise, console manufacturers could not change the software (including firmware) once a release was made. The only way they had back then to counter a modchip was to release a new model with a different design.

360 is most popular in USA. Lack of interest in breaking region lock, is one less incentive for us to maintain a modding scene than elsewhere.
It doesn't help when raids on pirate groups drive people underground.

I am not really following modern console modding but it seems Retro console modding is pretty healthy though.

-Rise of the Everdrive flashcarts in past years.
-Psio coming in the ( near? ) Future.
    -NESRGB
-Chinese team working on Saturn HDD loader.
    -Dreamcast GD rom emulation?
-A few modders now offering original XBOX cpu upgrade.
-People still coming up with genesis audio upgrades.

Those are the major things I can think of, i am sure I forget some.
I also recently got interested in the Amiga scene and it is pretty amazing the amount of mod/upgrades that are devised and available for purchase.
And then there are the minor mods/fixes that come in regularly.

With the wasabi ODE i think all of it was pretty much stolen from the X360Key ODE, so they stopped. but dont qute me on that i think i saw it on a thread on a modding site a while ago

I don't know where all the fanboyisum came from between the wasabi and 360key. In the end they are the same product I just like the wasabi more because its modular and uses esata (faster and less hassle in theory because you dont need to go from; SATA, USB then back to SATA again..)

The "scene" is too full of backstabbers and egotists out to make the most cash. Nobody really shares their discoveries any more because they know others will just clone it and put out a cheaper product. Nobody seems to want to hack for homebrew or "fun" reasons any more - it's all about piracy etc. Take a look at the Gateway 3DS or the fail0verflow WiiU report from earlier this year (late last year?). Pretty much every DS flash card has been cloned and f0 have said they had no real motivation to break the WiiU open completely because there was such little interest in homebrew and everyone else was just sitting back waiting for them to do all the work (and then probably steal it for profit).

I guess nobody makes chips any more because the new hardware has much more complex anti-piracy routines and a small chip won't be able to do what they want. Easier to make a drivechip or ODE as the drive isn't as complicated!

TX seemed to always be the best at XB360 stuff, though they never made an ODE did they? They just seem to be refining on RGH and their drive boards now. Maybe once (if) interest in the 'bone picks up they'll explore that but I doubt it.

The majority of modern day modding solutions have been mainly for beating copy protection and have been declared illegal in most countries. Combine this with declining sales of videogames in general and you'll understand why there are less solutions -compared to a few years ago- out there.

And with systems and eco-systems like the Intel NUC, Android-sticks, OUYA and Steam(box) it becomes much easier to have home-made and indie efforts on the big screen, thus making it less interesting for enthousiast to put days/months/years of time into developing with limited tools for consoles.

Oh yeah! That thing looks pretty cool. I'd be happy if they released just the bracket, too. I have a 360 with a SATA/power connector soldered to the motherboard but mounting a 3.5in drive inside can get messy.

It looks sick though. I prefer the look of the Wasabi slim myself just because it gave it the sidecar look a development kit has.
