    Hi all,

I have a soft modded black Xbox which is working well. I just purchased one of the Ice Blue Halo consoles which is hard-modded. Can I just swap my existing drive into the new one since it has a mod chip? I'd prefer not to have to reload all my data again if possible.

    Thanks,
    Mario

Yes but you best unlock your hdd first. Softmod can't work with locked hdd, and hardmod can, but hardmod can't magically guess the unlock code from the other box.

    Other way around.

Softmod REQUIRES the xbox hdd to be locked. Hardmod doesn't require the hdd to be locked. However, you first need to unlock the hdd before moving it from the softmodded xbox to the hard modded one.

Also, best to remove the softmod, the softmod may interfere with hardmod.

Configmagic xbox app can be used to unlock the hdd on your softmodded xbox. Make sure you save a copy of the EEPROM.bin and hdd key if you ever want to move it back.

The key used to lock the xbox hdd is unique to the xbox in which it is installed. It can be/is generated using information stored in the EEPROM on the xbox motherboard.

Have not tried it, but as it changes the HDDKey to all 0's and thus the password generated for any xbox so modified will be the same, looks good! As the author states, he's used on several xboxes. Not sure if anything else used the HDDKey. At least, no more Xbox Live to check for the original HDDKey value (if it ever did).

I think it would work for any value of HDDKey as long as you use the same value on all your xboxes.

I'd still save a copy of the original unmodified EEPROM.bin file for each xbox.

The idea is kinda good in the sense that in the scenario where the HDD crashes in your softmodded xbox for which you do not have an EEPROM backup, there's no need to hardmod it to get it up and running again. But if you either have a backup or you can hardmod it then there's not much of a point. Hardmod + unlocked HDD ftw!

    Depends.
If it's a hardmod with a chip that can be turned off, the HDD should be locked.

Turning off the chip was done to go on xbox live. Since your xbox got banned if you used that service with a modified bios, most modchip biosses and softmods disabled the option to use xbox live. But, why in heaven should you turn off the modchip now, since the live servers are down. Maybe if grimdoomers free alternative becomes available, you might need an original unmodded bios again, or a modded one with live enabled.
