I know this might be off topic, but what is the reason that you can't have an unlocked HDD with a softmodded Xbox ?

Because the BIOS still has the check enabled.

Personally speaking I found the hotswap method the easiest method for mine.
I'm impatient so it was more me not wanting to wait (and i needed to upgrade the HDD as well anyway). But yes, you still need to have things done in a certain way to unlock and relock the HDD.

I can also say that the hotswap method is the easiest of them all.

Just boot to error 12 (or to dashboard,in case of older 4034 v1.0 machines),have your PC's HDD IDE cable handy, swap, then go ahead with SID 5 and select the rebuild drive* option. Say yes to all options (including drive F if you use a stock 10GB HDD,stock 8GB drives won't ask for F drive) and wait until done. When you get the message that it's done, and you get to the main XBOXHDM menu, swap the IDE cable back to the Xbox, then turn it off. Connect the IDE cable back to the DVD-ROM (not required for 1.0 machines modded through the dashboard method,as the HDD is unlocked while in dashboard) and turn it back on. If done right, you should be greeted with a message saying something about USSR. If not, error 13 would appear, which is easy to fix,by redoing the entire process. It's pretty foolproof if you can handle IDE hotswapping.

And if you're on a 1.0-1.5 console, you can TSOP mod it. (also recommended, saves TONS of headaches with the HDD) 1.6s can't be TSOP'd because...well there's no TSOP in them.

*I actually recommend rebuilding the drive for older v1.0/1.1 (and any console without Live in fact) because it works from the first try. I've read on older posts that v1.0s are required to install MS 5960 dash first, then do the softmod. FALSE! - just use SID5 (it's pretty handy than custom-made discs - while a lot of my self-made discs would fail with error 13,SID5 worked from the first try.) and when asked,at the xboxhd main menu, just select Rebuild Xbox HDD from scratch.

    What it does is:
    format the HDD into FATX
create the partitions (C,E and F (10GB and larger) and the cache partitions,X,Y and Z)
and then copy the softmod files to C and E.

I actually did this method on a brand new v1.0 I've got (ST TSOP,last one that I had broken had a Hyundai TSOP nobody heard about) and now it happily runs along with UnleashX 0.39 and X2 5035 flashed on the TSOP.

NOTE:If you're paranoic about yourself breaking the TSOP (I did this once with a 1.4,and thankfully I didn't do again with this 1.0),you can do this: burn HeXEn on a disc (CD/DVD,depending on how good your optical drive is - my new Philips drive holds stronger than my old Samsung drive which now doesn't read anything),bridge the TSOP points, but DON'T install everything back yet. Just connect the DVD-ROM and HDD,and insert HeXEn into your DVD drive. Boot into it,and go to option 3 (TSOP flashed/Chipped Xbox Tools),and select option 2**,then select the desired option from the menu.***Once done, reboot your Xbox. (turn it off then back on) If it worked, then hooray! You did it as you should. Now,turn off the Xbox, take the board out,and remove the bridges on the TSOP unlock points.
    That's how I did it and now I have a permanently-modded Xbox.

**You will NEED to select 3 if you have a Winbond TSOP (v1.4,possibly 1.5 has it too) because EvoX cannot flash Winbond chips.
*** In case you have a 1.0 or 1.1 (like I do),most likely you'll have a 1MB TSOP (ST/Hynix/Hyundai). select second option ("Flash 512K,v1.0-1.5) and then choose your favourite BIOS.
