    Hi everyone,

    I've finally made my mind up and decided to sell this one on. I bought it almost immediately after release, used it a little then shifted over to my trusty Xbox 360 for a while until eventually grabbing a slim PS3 and using that. Aside from a handful of games, I only used a single blu-ray disc, so I believe the drive should still be in tip-top condition. I checked the unit over thoroughly and there are no significant scratches (and I intend to buff it up prior to shipping). When it wasn't being used, I kept it covered, so there's no dust inside clogging up the fans and whatnot.

    Here's a general description of the unit:

    Model No.: CECHA00
    Firmware: 3.15 (never upgraded beyond in order to preserve the Other OS functionality)
    HDD: 60 GB (screw head slightly worn due to me almost replacing the drive, then changing my mind)
    Misc: Original packaging, 1 x Six-Axis controller, manuals, JP power cable, A/V cable (NOT HD), ethernet cable and USB cable included

    Hopefully, the pictures should be able to give a better idea of the condition, but if anyone wants specific shots of anything, please PM me (the fourth pictures shows everything except the USB cable as I need to dig that one out). As you can see from the top two pictures, the box has some cosmetic marks on it and the carry handle is loose. Nothing serious, but I wanted to mention it nonetheless.

    Price-wise, I'm looking for €300 (plus shipping), but serious offers will definitely be considered. Anyway, feel free to PM me to ask any questions, make an offer or discuss shipping.

    Cheers!

    Would help if you went into the user control panel to add your location details...

    Stupid question I know, but the JPN 60GB PS3 only plays JPN PS1 and PS2 games, correct?

    I know its true for the US 60GB system where it only plays US PS2/1 games but cant find any concrete answers for the JPN version.

    Would you mind putting a game from your region in to see if it works? (PS2/PS1)

    @Neoistheone2000, out-of-the-box you will only be able to play Japanese region PS1 and PS2 games. However since the keys are out there, it's likely someone will hack the regiocode out of these machines, and making these units the holy grail for retro PlayStation gaming....

    Was this a Japanese-made PS3 or was it made in China? I'm just curious.

    I don't really think there's much of a difference in quality, but afaik only the first production run of retail PS3s came out of Japan. It might even be a selling point!

    @Neoistheone2000
    Wombat already covered this, but just to clarify, one of the first things I did was try out PS1/PS2 games from different regions, but it only plays NTSC-J ones I'm afraid (didn't find any incompatibility issues though, which was good).

    @Eviltaco64
    This was one of the first production run produced in Japan, or at least I believe it is as it was a day-one purchase when I lived out there. Are there any obvious markings that would prove this?

    The production code and the country of origin are on the system's product label! :)

    Hmm, strange. Just taken a look at the production code on the unit itself and it seems to correspond to the second one you listed, meaning it was in fact manufactured in China. I'm going to have to go back and verify precisely which unit this is as I bought a few on behalf of friends starting from the launch day.

    Out of curiosity though, are there any technical differences between the Japanese-made and Chinese-made models?

    Best way to find out is to check the label on the console it would either read: 'Made in China' or 'Made in Japan' this is by far the simplest way to check.

    Also on the top part of the box where it shows you what the contents include it should also state the above country or origin.

    No major differences is just people including myself prefer their electronics made in Japan rather than China!

    @playmore64,

    Thanks for the tip, but I was already able to identify the manufacturing location from the info given earlier. Upon further investigation, I found the original receipt which verified this was actually the unit I bought in January 2007, NOT the one I got on the release day, which I presume is the one I've still got packaged up in my flat in Japan (will check when I'm next there).

    Anyway, I'm guessing the lack of any real differences in the hardware won't really have an impact on the value too much.

    Bump!

    Still looking for a new home for this unit. No additional price drops, but wanted to mention that I'm open to trade offers. Currently, I'm after an iPad (3rd generation onwards) and an Xbox 360 dev/review kit.

    I just sold one exactly like this one (was on firmware 2.76) and it went for about 240 euros. It still quite low if you match it up with ebay prices but I believe if you drop down to 250, it may seems more attractive ;)

    I had 6 of those units during the last 3-4 years. Some were made in Japan, some were made in China. The "made in China" units were better all around (I'm bored to detail why)

    I guess its more to do with quality control than were the unit was made

    BTW, the "made in Japan" sixaxis controllers have much worse labels on the back than the "made in China" one's. The first one's tend to fade over time on the back whereas the China one's still look ok after a long time.

    Good luck with your sale :)

    Hi guys,

    Thanks for the feedback, and for the additional insight into Japanese/Chinese manufacturing differences. As for placing the unit on Ebay, I'm trying to avoid that for now as I've had some nasty experiences selling things there in the past and was hoping to let this particular unit go to somebody from the community who might see treat it nicely and give it a good home. I'm still considering lowering the price further, but time will tell. If it goes too low I might just put the thing back on my shelf!

    As for PS3 Test units, I'm currently sizing up a few I have and will try to settle on pricing soon if anyone's looking.

    I have this one in the form of virginity, i will not tried to sell this now, but i can tell almost all about this model if anybody interested.

    If we are on OFW:

    • 2.xx - you can install rare official linux with fully support, and ps3 will be awesome server for example or it's will turn into uncut complete powerful PC, but not good for gaming, it's like server, powerful for calculations only, you can write special linux software, which will be able to take control of all the power of PS3, thanks flexibility of Linux.
    • 3.xx - all "OtherOS" functions has been deleted!! That's Sony's turn, they delete ALL of otherOS func. from OFW 3.xx, you need to know this.
    • Old games - PS1, PS2 -> only physical CD/DVD, only NTSC-J, 100% compatibility, but don't expect much from backward emulation, on 2.xx ofw it's have bad quality, on 3.xx ofw better, but still not so good, as anybody thought, that's sad a little, i mean games looks just like usual ps2, nothing special like pcsx2 effects, nothing like this, only now have digital image and sound.
    • PS3 Games - no region lock! Free to play any PS3 game, any region and any languages.
    • Blue-ray films - some euro disks are working fine, no region lock, or almost like this.
    • Upgrade ofw to 4.xx/lastest: not recommended! Becouse some people says, with 4.xx ofw there is no more backward compatibility (like no more linux in 3.xx ofw) due ps2classics releases, i dont know true or not, but still, be carefull with that, and think twice before doing update.

    If we are on CFW + Cobra:
    Any ps1, ps2 any region, even all "debug/demo/trial/promo/preview builds" works perfect without physical drive. (it's not piracy, if we play only acquired our own licensed ps2 games dumps)
    Plus we can downgrade this model back to 2.xx ofw and install uncut linux again.
    Very usefull thing, about widescreen patches, if you running ps2 game 720/1080 resolution, you will need it with codebreaker or ARMAX DVD, cos many games don't have wide mode display.
    ---
    fell free to ask something else.
    p.s. sry 4 maybe bad En.

    Thanks for the rundown of functionality SILENT_Pavel. I've not dabbled in CFW-related things, so can't really add anything there, but regarding the Blu-Ray compatibility with European discs, I've been lead to believe that PlayStation 3's in general don't really have any trouble playing any discs as the vast majority aren't locked to a specific region like DVDs are. Furthermore, it seems like Anime discs tend to be where the region-locking mostly occurs, but seeing as this is an NTSC-J model, it'll happily play Japanese content no questions asked!

    Oh, and the unit is still available by the way! Any offers?

    I still haven't made much progress on the PlayStation 3 Test unit front I'm afraid, but am preparing a Final Fantasy VII Advent Children Complete PlayStation 3 bundle for sale. Details, including pictures and price, etc., will be added to a new thread as soon as the unit's been checked properly.
