Hi, I'm hoping you guys can help. I've not attempted the repair stated before. I have a console I'd really like to get working again but one of the chips on it isn't working properly due to a solder pad being missing. Looking at the board a trace runs from said pad to a little hole in the board and turning it over shows a trace running from the hole to another point with solder on it. I was thinking to run a wire from the leg of the chip which has no solder pad straight to the blob of solder where it appears the traces end. Would this be right? Thanks!
Ill help ya. The little hole is a Via point. Scrape lightly on the via point top and bottom to expose the copper once its shiny all around dab a small amount of flux on it. Get some 30awg wire cut it longer then then the length from the via to the chip you need to jump. Strip one side long enough to have 2 mm of exposed wire on both sides of the board. Watch out for other chips or components! Dip the exposed wire in flux and inset into the via point. On the bottom of board bend it over and make sure you have some of the wire exposed on the top side. On you iron cover the tip with solder and let it wet for a second or two. Clean off all that solder and now just get a small amount of solder to attach to the iron. Once your sure you have the amount you think is safe pull up lightly on the 30awg wire to have part of the exposed wire top side and touch your iron with the solder side to the board and wire at the same time. Now you should have a correctly solder jumper on the top side. Flip your board and straiten the wire on the bottom and solder like top side. Clip of any extra wire sticking out. Now to jump the leg of the chip flatten the wire to make a neat path not going over any components and cut just a little longer then what is need to attach to the leg. Strip of a small amount of the wire and dip in flux and pretin with a small small amount of solder just to coat the wire. Dab a small amount of flux on the new pretin wire and the leg you want to solder. Clean the iron tip then place the wire on the leg and hold it. Touch the iron to the leg/wire and now you should be good to give it a quick bench test. If all is good use some hi temp hot glue or my personal favorite supper glue to tack down the jumper cable close up and enjoy. In the event that the jumper did not fix make sure your other pads are not botched or solder splash around the board. Worse case is the bad that is broken is connected also to another via under the chip and you will have to jump it from the under side of the board (PITA !) Good luck
