When browing through some very old archives on Sega.co.jp I found this: Funny how little things seem to have changed, if you compare this to the recent statements from Microsoft and Sony. Companies still seem to boast (now more than ever) about how amazingly/unbelievably powerfull their 'next-generation' consoles will be, how your entire life will change, and how it will play a central role in the multimedia revolution. Is it me, or has in fact nothing changed/got even worse? Just thought I'd share this. ;p Also, I found this:
I believe games have improved and consoles have also... except.. wheres originality these days... It seems u buy a next gen console or the newest console for just one game... take PS2 for example.. many people (there are exceptions, mainly on this forum) who bought it just for the GTA series.. have games gone this bad? when i went shopping for some gamecube games.. I didnt want medal of honor, taz or fps because they have been on so many platforms that they are not innovative anymore. and man.. look at the rates on the game... NFSU can be played from 3 years old and up... zelda from 7 years and up.. Ever seen a kid in a diper playing NFSU ???? its like hey buy your kid NFSU! he wont be playing it.. but its fun to look at
Funny that you say, today I noticed that I have got 31 PS2 games now, only four of which are from non-Japanese developers
I must confess I bought the PS2 mainly for FFX, though I got Devil May Cry and Metal Gear Solid 2 while I waited. FFX ended up sucking ass and I traded it in for Breath of Fire V, which is my favourite game of all time. My library of PS2 games has grown with many good "exceptions" to the rule that mostly all PS2 games pretty much suck. Every game in my library (Except Devil May Cry and Ring of Red) is a sequel or a port. Yeah, gaming is a bit... stuck, lately.
I wonder how much of a 'rule' it really is when everything save for a few really flashy, overhyped examples are the 'exception'?
Maybe my own personal rule. Really, though, a majority of PS2 software is trash... even if the exceptions are well worth having the damn thing anyway. Then again, I'm also somewhat bitter because they don't bring games like Disgaea over here because vendors say "they don't sell".
Sadly due to development being more expensive and more staff neeeded most developers are now just making the same thing as sure fire bets, as well nintendo is doing this just to churn out games faster, hence why games like donkey konga and star fox are being done by namco as it allows them to focus their resorces on their own things. Even many japanese developers have spoken how they feel they sadly cant make the games they want to make half the time and how they use to not make games for a specific audience. WIll this slump end? Will see. Sadly i was one of those who bougth a ps2 just for gta and final fantasy. X-box was the same as i bought it just for ninja gaiden and doa ultimate. as well as rent a hero no1 before it got canceled.
I hate to break it to you guys, but churning out endless clones of the same concepts is nothing new in video games. Has anyone here *PLAYED* the games on the NES? The Atari 2600? It's just that in my opinion, the games that were endlessly cloned and repeated back in the 8- and 16-bit eras were much more fun than the games that are cloned and repeated today. Innovation has never been the norm or even a significant under-current in the games industry. And it's really got nothing to do with Japanese developers versus American ones, either. Even Sega in their heydey was hardly better. ...word is bondage...
Yup, Sweater Fish. I spent last afternoon playing games of that time with my friends (viaB PSX and Dreamcast based emulation), and, yes, the late 80s and early 90s have double dragon, battletoads, Final Fight, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage and so on. Still, I somehow feel something's missing from today's games. Oh, and Altered Beast, Golden Axe, and most of the "Smash Pack" made me remember why I wasn't much of a Sega fan back then. Sonic does, however, rock my ...um.... soxx0r, proverbially.
I think classic games are way over-rated, mostly becos the nostalgia that found in most old school players I know those games "feel" cooler that todays, but remember that back them most of us were kids and preteens. Man, back then even a trip to the country was something cool :-D
Well, if they feel cooler than they are cooler, because coolness is all in the feeling. I prefer 8- and 16-bit games because I like games you can pick up and play for 5 minutes without having to think about them. Deep storylines, having to unlock all the good stuff and complicated control schemes (not to mention complicated controllers) are just a total bring down. There's still good games being made, but there's way more good games form the past, but then that's just logic since there's always going to be way more things (games or otherwise and good or otherwise) from the past than there are from the present. ...word is bondage...
