turns out i have a friend at sony! old friend from grammar school works in their hardware division. i knew he worked for an electronics company in cali, but i never thought to ask where. heres what he told me that he said i can tell other people. im sure most of this is public knowledge, but it puts things in perspective none the less. - controller has been changed! it will look like a ps2 controller with slight changes. and will also have a USB port for memory sticks, peripherals, headsets est. - will have full bluetooth capability. will be used for controllers and headsets among others. - will have only one optical drive with 2 lasers ala PSX. that way it can read blueray and ps1 and ps2 games. - he couldnt say much about the online service, but it will be AWESOME. he also hinted at on demand movies and games. - bluray disks are going into production next month under a partnership with panasonic. - sony will NOT be loosing $900+ on each unit as some sites claim. they will be loosing a very acceptable amount. itll cost more than a current 360. - the unit is 70% smaller then it was at around e3 last year. but still not at the final mandatory size. - a 2006 chrismas season release is 100% certain. and there will be TONS of systems. they learned much from 360. they were literally LAUGHNG at MS for that blunder. and a little PSP news: - a microdrive or any other build with static memory is not final, but a redesign is fully underway, but not nearly finalized - from now into the foreseeable future, PSPs will be 'are bones' units, meaning no more headphones, games, movies or pack in memory.
If that is true I hope they plan to further drop the price of the unit come christmas time (like maybe $150-$175 for the bare bone unit).
New news to me, and welcome I might add. Sure I've not tried the boomerang so can't really comment..but it didn't look right!
I saw this on the EBGames website the other day, since I was probably going to go pick up a PSP tommorow (first pay check ). After stopping by the local EBGames, though, all I saw was the standard package. Maybe it hasn't hit the stores yet?
Isn't the hardware being designed in Japan? It reminds me a bit of back at school, when a lad's father worked for Sega and had a Mega Drive 3 with Sonic 4. He wouldn't let me come around because their house was being decorated... for 2 years!
yeah, its all in japan. but it sounds like the relationship between the two divisions are good. he didnt mention any strife. he mainly works on logitech peripherals and such.
Nice, I wonder if the new PSP will use a new layout (like a clamshell desing) or just a smaller versions of today's one. About the PS3, I seriously doubt they can make it 70% smaller than the e# version. The lad was a freakin liar, go kick his ass if he's still alive
i don't think all this insider info is tottally on the up and up... sorry i am not big ps fan hatter or anything but i doubt it will be able to do everything they claim stright out of the box... LOOOK at the ps2 hard drive they left that high and dry and don't get me started on the playstation vmu.
Did you guys see the "first gen" ps3? It was a 6U server... roughly the size of a small refrigerator. It is obviously much smaller now.

the system shown during that period was an empty mockup. the actual HARDWARE was the size of a large desktop pc, or like ProgrammingAce said, pretty much a mini fridge.
