Some questions about editing music for DC, PS2 games

Hey, I'm new to the forums, I have a question that isn't specifically about game development, but I'd like to know if anybody can help. In games which use ADX files for sound, which are used on DC, PS2, and other sytems as well.
It's possible to insert your own adx sound files to be played in the game. The ADX sound files are stored in an AFS archive. Some games I am checking have other AFS archives which contain .snd files, but I cannot find any way to open or edit these files.
The particualr game I am working with now is Capcom vs Snk 2. I was just wondering if anyone knew what software developers might have used to create these files?

I don't know off the top of my head, but there is a thread on Shoryuken.com witha tutorial on how to do it on a dreamcast.

It's really possible for all the games I know, but some games don,t allow you to change the bitrate of the sample (a.k.a. downsample) becasue they are hardcoded to play files at a fixed bitrate. As for the tools to create adx files, there's a homemade wav2adx.exe program floating on the net (legal one, not a CRI bootleg) just google it.

Well I know all about changing the ADX files, as a matter of fact, I wrote a tutorial to do just that. It's the .snd files that are what I'm not sure I can edit.
My handle on SRK is SteveF, if that's the tutorial you are talking about.

Hey DethKikr, how hard is it to change the background music on DC games. I have thought about it for a while, it would be neat to change some of the music in my favorite shumps like GigaWing. I have a image of the game so I assume I would need to extract the audio and reinsert mine under the same name? Can you like me to your guide so I can look into it. Oh and welcome to the forums ;)

It depends upon wether or not the game uses .adx music. I don't have the files for gigawing to check it, but start it up, usually the games come up with a black and white ADX logo on startup. Here's a link to my guide:

it's for swapping ps2 music, but much of it just applies to using .wav files and changing them to .adx. If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask.
If I had the game data, I could tell you for sure.

Sorry if I misunderstood you, but I think you'll like my 2de reply more than the 1st one.

    http://www.fileinfo.net/extension/snd

    http://reference.wolfram.com/mathematica/ref/format/SND.html [seems not that useful]

    TOOL FOR MACOX10: http://www.download.com/YAAC/3000-2182_4-10286012.html?tag=lst-0-8

    TOOLS FOR WINDOWS (DBPowerAMP+PLUGINS):
This app+plugins allow you to play .AU and .SND files, and to encode .SND files with DBPOWERAMP

    http://www.dbpoweramp.com/dmc.htm

    http://www.dbpoweramp.com/codec-central.htm

    http://www.dbpoweramp.com/bin/dMC-r10.exe

    http://www.dbpoweramp.net/codecs/dBpowerAMP-codec-dalet-r1.exe

SND INFO: The Dalet format (*.SND) is based on MP2 encoding, with some extra peak volume data for display purposes.

I actually don't know if this is the same .snd files that the dreamcast games use, but I really think it is.

Thanks, man, I'll check those out and see if I can get anything working.
    edit: tried.
Hmm, they must not be the same ones, dBpoweramp just freezes everytime i try to convert to .wav. I even tried goldwave, which will open it, but it doesnt know the format offhand so I have to guess the bitrates, and it comes out as just static... I wish somebody was a sound developer from Capcom around here...

Yeahm I used the plugin, but as both you and I see there are a million and one types of .snd files, and there's really no way to find out which type it is... I wonder if I were to e-mail capcom if they'd tell me...

I don't know if this is any help but have you heard of DKZ studio?? i use it for editing .afs files for the pc version of pro evo 6 and i have used it to insert my own ADX files into the game and it has a wav-adx converter.

i don't know if it works with .snd files as never used them but i beleive it might??

Yeah, that's what I use for changing music as it is, for PS2 games, nothing on there for SND. Thanks for the idea, though. I'll just have to give up for now, and maybe I'll stumble onto a solutoin...

Did you tried playing it in video lan media player?
It's a media player with no codec that read almost everything, so if it's not an extremely custom sound file you should be able to hear it, and maybe to see the codec in the info window.

I wanted to change the music in Shutokou Battle 2 (Tokyo Extreme 2) but it's compressed in to ASF. Uncompressing the ADX track s from the ASF isn't a problem but getting them back in to the AFS file is :( Any ideas of an easy way to get around this?

Yakumo what did you use to uncompress the adx tracks from the asf?? Like in my earlier post i have used dkz studio for adx files all you need to do with that is open an afs file which shows you all files within then extract the relevent files then drag and drop your created adx tracks back over and then its a case of overwriting them and saving the file.

Thats how i would do it and find it easy but then again i don't really know any otherway??

That sound s avery easy way which I will try. The way I did it was with a few small homebrew dev tools. It was years ago so I don't remember the names now.

I'll give it a shot with the meathdo you use.

3do, the tool you want to use is AFSExtractor. It has a nice option that allows you to recover file names as well.

This looks like it will help you figure out how to compile the files back into a usable AFS, Yakumo: link
