hi all i am wondering of something since i know it is maybe strange and my mouth is babbling so here goes i like all languages because i think they are exiting but since it is an international messageboard hmmm can´t we keep the conversations in english ? and help eachother when we stumples upon sites where we don´t understand the language ? and yes i know there are a hell more people speaking Spanish than Danish (we are 5.5 million people plus minus in Denmark) so as i think this since i once transalated the rules of the Depeche Mode hub into danish should we not try to keep the conversations in public to English and PM´s to our national languages ? all best regards and thoughts to all and peace forever sincerly WolverineDK this is not a flamer at all because as i said it was a wondering so all who wants to express there meaning on the subject are welcome and it is not just to the Spanish speaking mates but to all
I generally do this: If someone that speaks my language directly asked me something in Spanish in a forum, I answer in Spanish. For any other case, it's English only. Do I add subtitles to those Spanish posts in the future? I find it sort of ... awkward... to speak in English to someone else whose primary language is also Spanish. But if requested to, I'll do it, no offence taken.
Well, I only understand English and Spanish, so those are peachy for me. Since it's pretty obvious that nearly everyone is fluent in English (or close enough) we should probably abll be speaking it. It doesn't really seem like theres anything we really need to enforce though. Basically, if you want your topic to be read by the majority of people here, it has to be in English. As a result, most posts are in English. The only way I could possibly be bothered by posts in many different languages is if they started taking over...if suddenly half the posts were in five different languages that not everybody understood, it would be a bit frustrating. This is a small enough community though that I don't think anyone really sees a need to break off into little sects based on native languages. The only other non-english issue I can think of is the occiasional user who comes here, and does not speak English that well. This has happened a few times before, and what we normally get is a post in broken English that we all get the gist of. I don't really mind if someone who isn't good with English makes a post in their own language in order to ask a question or buy an item every so often. Why? Since this is an international board, we often have somebody around who can translate. That said though, I'd still encourage those who have an interest in dev and other obscure hardware but aren't great at English to stick around. Odds are, if they did hang around long enough, they could pick up some English, and join in more...It's a win, win situation they get to talk about games, and they'd pick up some English which (don't call me an aarogant American for saying this) is a useful language. Oh...look, that's quite long isn't it!
You're doing pretty good so far. Cahaz has made great improvement since he started here. It's no doubt great for your English skills to be participating in an English-based forum .
and on a little sidenote i have seen main chats(on DC hubs) become unreadible because some wrote their own language fast and not english, and that was not fun.
By all means, please speak your native language to others who also speak it. I'm with Blur2040, It would only be inconvient if suddenly all the posts were in another language, but so far that hasn't been a problem. I would ask that if you're talking about somthing cool that the rest of us might be interested in to translate for us. Your english sounds fine. I speak like five words in Spanish myself.
I think that any language is fine but it does get rather annoying when you see 4 or 5 posts written in Spanish or what ever. I'd like to know what they say but I can't read them. I think it would be a good idea if you write in another language then please also write a translation for those who can't understand your native tongue. I'm sure quite a few people would be a bit miffed if GaijinPunch and myself started posting in Japanese to each other :smt045 I'm not having a rant but just saying that it would be common curtsey to let others know what you have written. There are no secrets here. Yakumo
One thing i know for sure. Important info is always in english. When i type in portuguese here (rarely) is always to talk with Ignarius, PrOfUnD Darkness or any of the othe brazilians, and the subject is not important. I have no problem typing in english (actually i think the board helped me a lot , improving my english learning).
I don't think speaking in your own language is a problem if it's clear when you are conversing to somebody and the subject is not important - I remember one moderator intervention after someone posted in Dutch, but it was in response to a post of mine that was aimed at him, and hence I felt it a bit out of line, but I digress. On another note, I wouldn't mind an "international section" like Neo-geo.com has.
I agree that it isn't too much of a problem, really. Most of the posts are in English. When I've seen the occasional Dutch post or whatever, it has usually been when a new user has popped up and I assume someone says hey how u doing? or something like that. I would say... if your English isn't great (or someone you are replying to appears to be struggling) and you want to talk to someone in your native tongue, then go ahead. However, if it is a topic that all the board would appreciate, then I'd say write in English or at least provide a quick translation to English If I were in the shoes of you guys, and was speaking my limited English on the board, and it didn't make a lot of sense to others, then I would appreciate a friendly correction from a board member who either can translate from your language, or from someone who speaks better English and can understand. It is certainly a great way to learn English! As for other languages, I wouldn't want the board swamped with them, but I don't mind picking up some other languages How about a Japanese phrasebook thread in the Japan forum, with some essential phrases we might need in Japan? You know, things like - where is the game shop? How much is this? I could buy this cheaper on eBay! :-D
I think an international section would be a good idea too - it might get even more members on this board! Not like I'm any good at any other languages - I finished school with a D in German, and my Japanese is pretty shit (イン・ザット・アイ・カント・ライト・オー・リード・*リアル*・ジャパニーズ)
Multilingual thinking makes people's brains fasters, actually. A Japanese speaker with basic knowledge of grammar, for example, can start programming for Macromedia Director lingo much faster. It's the same structure! A wa B desu (kono ringo ha akai desu) object.characteristic = condition (sprite(9).visible = true) sprite(ringo).akai = desu/true I'm a writer in the Spanish language, most likely to be published this year or the next one. I've taught a college level research class that ended up being an academic writing class (since Spanish is a bit more complex than English, and pretty much nobody can write it flawlessly) Should anybody request any help with anything related to the Spanish language, I'm more than willing to help with it. My English, however, has become rusty after five years of Spanish-Only studies in college. Most of my teachers in High School were Canadian, though, so I can say I've achieved a decent grip on the language (Eh?) I started studying Japanese during my second year of High School, also, and though all those Kanji still manage to elude my memory, I'm pretty much able to know what people are talking about on TV if I'm not required to read a lot. So I'm pretty much in favour of the idea of the international section - and I'm pretty sure it'll do us all a lot of good to shift gears in terms of languages. In short, should anybody need any help in terms of linguistics, ask me and I'll help you. And since we're in the language department, can somebody help me learn the proper usage of British style swear words?
Don't worry, Xerdo, your English is *very* good :smt023 And by the way, those examples of Director code looks rather like any procedural programming language minus Pascal that uses some sort of data abstraction, in fact the same code would also work in C(++). But I digress. And with regards to British swear words, I'd leave it to the actual British members to explain you that, but I can tell that appending "innit" to every other sentence makes you halfway streetsmart already :smt043
