Saw this one on Facebook: Australia somewhere, and there's a lot of ruined vintage G&W and Pro Stick. Makes you want to hug your collection tonight, and plan to move it to higher ground tomorrow.
I think it was someone from NeoGAF? It happened a couple of years ago though, this is old news. We even had a thread about it here on ASM.
Beat me to it Friemnemy Yeah this is old news, But that doesn't make it any less heartbreaking. Classic gaming lost to nature, is a sad thing.
A lot of people would look at this and say "it's just video games", but to whoever this collection belonged to i can guarantee it meant a lot more. We all collect for different reasons, but i believe we all have a special reason for why we collect certain items. We pour so much time, effort, and money into our collections to eventually reach some type of personal fulfillment that our collections almost become a part of us. It makes me sad to think about loosing the games and consoles I've collected. Sure, in reality, they are just material objects, but that's not the reason why we collect them. I hope whoever this collection belonged to is ok and continues doing what he loves.
Oh, well it's bit odd that people in flood threatened areas don't have high storage. A few areas around Australia houses are on stilts. I'd be shattered if this happened to me though :dejection:
This is why I keep NOTHING in our basement. I live in a very wet area and flooding in my basement is not uncommon. 3 years ago we had 3 feet of water come in during an epic 3 day rain storm.
That may even work in some cases, but all boxes, manuals and labels are ruined so the value would decrease by 95% anyways. Let alone all the magnetic disks which are physically ruined.
I had a similar thing happen to me. If you haven't experienced it, you need to remember that with floods it isn't just water. It is dirt water and its very fine and coats everything. And to make matters worse, the water itself isn't "clean" besides the dirt, it can also have sewage or other unmentionables in it, which makes everything smell very bad that you don't throw out. Also, whatever might be hanging around in your basement... say you've got a bucket of something. When I had it, I threw out 80% of things. No games tho, they were upstairs.
I'm guessing it was Lawrence from NFGGames/GamesX etc. I remember reading about it a couple of years ago when the floods in Queensland happened. http://nfgworld.com/mb/thread/1003-Queensland-Flood-NFG-s-Story There's links to more pics on that page.
Losing my game collection in a flood has been a worry of mine for a while, and yet I have my whole collection stored in a basement, which would be the "danger" area. My basement has never flooded ever, but I guess there is a first time for everything. If it happened to me, I would surely be kicking myself.
I know this sounds crazy, but most of those electronix could have been carfully taken apart and cleaned. I have cleaned flood damaged motherboards in the dishwasher. With the CD-roms you just have to take them apart and clean them, then apply chain grease to the armatures. Heck at least 3 times in my life I have cleaned phones that have been in the toilet(before flushing :disgust: ), or had a drink spilt on them. But hey, the situation is unreal, and when your entire life is turned upside down, sometimes it's easier to let go. Especially when there isn't a clean surface in your house, and your home needs to be repaired(and most likely your wallet), before and preservation of video game consoles commences.
I LIve on top of a large hill so flooding doesn't happen to me but, I have to make a barrier on the edges of my yard this season so my grass seed won't run away from me when it rains. Keep your collection in a side room on the top floor away from lights.
That's what I thought at first too but after experiencing the river of filth a flood will bring first hand I can testify there would have been no way. It's indescribable except to say it will ruin everything it touches. It'll get into everything too. Like, into absolutely everything. Even things you think are sealed up, it'll get in there. It's toxic and caustic and ugh. I've cleaned some stuff off from a terrible state for work (including things that had animals rotting inside them) but nothing was like this crap.
Woaaaah, don't talk about washing motherboard (sans battery) in plain water here! Some people really shit the bed over it.
