In Europe, Universities do way too much theory and treat the computer's resources as endless for most of the studies. Obviously, this might be ok on the PC to some extent, but when making games, and especially for video games consoles, this is a stress factor.

There's way too much academic taste in EU game code, and I tip my hat to Rareware for not going with 'standard' programmers (up until their MS acquisition). Rareware had a good reason to require mathematical disciplines such as degrees in advanced mathematics or physics, because understanding graphs and numbers really helps one realize how much they can squeeze out of a system. (by starting from available resources, working up their way to target results, and finally implimenting algorithms and speed-hacks in the most efficient way - most programmers start from the other way around: they begin with algorithms and code optimization is just the final step of their work after they realize that performance isn't really up to standards, because they had too many 'bright ideas' that couldnt finally be included - an example of why there's dumb AI in many games)

It cuts down on the cost of buying a Performance Analyzer, too. Those machines do exactly that - show were the code gets sloppy and where it performs correctly, aiming at pushing every possible aspect of the hardware to the fullest, despite bottlenecks (I m looking at you PS2). And they cost an arm and a leg - so it's a better investment to hire some hardcore math/physics-geeks that also know how to code than to hire 'pure' commercial programmers

Metropolis (formerly Tokyo Classified) posted this one as well, and as usual, did not post a source.

Ooops! Even BBC World News covered this story. Bet they feel silly.

Apparently the story started at The Sun... colour me surprised.

Still, pathetic that the BBC ran it without verifying it first.
