You know.. this is just my little rant.. kinda funny

Nowadays alot of people shun down "pirate copied" games, xbox, gamecube, ps2.. etc.. but not too many do it with older "classic" systems (roms and stuff)

Now mind you I honestly dont care, and If a game is good, BUY it ( i do think we all have our share of $50 games that we played once ;-) ) ..

HOWEVER now pirate "classic" games + systems are worth money! When you come to think of it, it is something really... something that is shunned upon is valuable, and collectable!

Dont get me wrong, back "in the day" pirating was hard unlike today... today any 12 yr old with a cd burner can copy a cd, or a game with free tools off the internet.. but back then...it was alot harder.. and the people who did it were dedicated!

    Just my $.02 :)

I think he meant like pirate carts for Megadrive etc. I love them, I've got a few and find them fascinating - the box/sticker art is always amusing. As I'm not funding any pirates by buying them now, I don't have an ideological problem with it (like I would if I was buying pirate PS2 DVDs, for instance), and that's the difference.

Also backup devices for SNES, Megadrive etc are technically interesting and just plain cool. It's not like I'm using them to get free shit, I prefer and own the real thing as far as games go, but there's something intrinsically enjoyable about getting a machine to do something it wasn't supposed to.

I agree with CJPC and Alchy, pirate originals/pirate hardware can be pretty cool when it's inventive (unlike those 12252352 variants of Famiclones that I see here). I don't like to play games by an emulator (the exception being NES games on the GP32, oddly), and in general I am thus opposed to the whoe ROM scene, and especially all the annoying teenagers that constitute its major demographic :smt071

I really don't think this is the case. I don't think that pirated goods are really becomming collectible. I do think however that people are trying to buy up retro consoles. For example, lots of people want Famicoms now... they head on over to eBay and pick up a "OMFG RARE" Famicom for $89 because they're just so damn rare. What they actually just bought was a Famicom clone that is worth a whole $5er, but they don't know the difference (and probably never will) because they're so fucking stupid :)

Don't get me wrong. I hate:

    -"ROM"s being so easily available
    -The emulation "scene"
    -Emu kiddiez
-Pirated consoles (especially shit Famicom ones)
-Pirated games (bootlegs as well as "backups" and ROM CDs)
    -Emulators for blatant piracy
    -The warez scene
    -People selling "backups"

    I do like:

-Backup devices (pirated/cloned backup devices are dispicable)
    -Official systems
    -Official games
-Emulators for debugging, development purposes, playing games you personally backed up
-Unlicensed games/enhancer hardware (Tengen, Camerica, Hacker Intl)
-"Backups of games" because some people don't have the space or even want to own 3440 game cartridges/CDs.
-The console "scene" (great source of info and utilities, as well as updates to hardware like EPROMs and PLD. It wasn't just pirated games...)

I think if people are going to pirate stuff, they should do it for their own evil purposes, and that they should get no support from anyone else. I'm against any sale of pirated goods. I also think that if someone is going to pirate something, they should do it right. Nothing is lam3r than a stupid pirate (who rips their elite import Saturn game into ISO/MP3 shit so the console scene n00bs can download it on their 56ks.)

warez stanf or softwarez, dont know why a ''Z'' but softwarez stand for illegal software , hacked software, software that you should pay for. Gamez is also said for the same reason.... but its not a software it a game. ;-)

2: The emulation "scene" is a theoretical group of people who share the same interest through practice. In this case its piracy through emulation and "ROMs." The scene constantly keeps track of what new emulators are released or enhanced so that they can play new games for systems they don't even own.

3: Emu kiddiez is one of my preferred vernacular for the little and big bastards who do #2.

5: Bootlegs I define as pirated material distributed through the original medium. Thus I categorize pirated cartridge games and multicarts as this. This also includes CD silvers or "HK CDs" and CD-Rs.

6: When people play "ROMs" in emulators that they do not own. Infact I despise people who don't take the time to learn how to backup their own games. Newbies should start pirating the stuff they already own.

7: cahaz basically said it. I don't like the idea of people banding together to pirate things for people incapable or too lazy to do it themselves. Piracy SHOULD come at a price, my preferred price is patience, practice and knowledge or FAILURE. I think that the old console scene was a healthy thing (albeit horribly illegal) because at least people back then were smarter about what they were doing, they had to be. People didn't sugar coat piracy for you then. (And of course there were far fewer newbies.)

Wow i didnt think that this would takeoff in a sense.. some nice thoughts!

I do agree that games and such that are not available in your home country , you should be free to get, or even atleast play on a console that doesnt have to be modified!

Like what the US government does now is a joke.. its illegal for me to put a modchip in my xbox, ps2, saturn, whatever to play imports, or homebrew dev (though we all know its gonna be used in 80% of the people to play copied games) and i can go to jail for circumventing the law, but the law also says that i have a right to a LEGITIMATE backup copy!

    That makes things ahellofalota confusing!

Like i do get a kick outta pirate rom's and carts, like Mario in Sonic 2, and all that fun stuff, but the people that do a bad job at the pirate, then try to pass it off as real = meh!

If your gonna pirate, have PASSION and do a good job, otherwise give up!

    hmmmmmm hate

    Colony 5 Hate

    I have seen this before
But not so close to heart
    So much anger to release
    The chemicals put it there

    Life is not a movie
    This is fact not fiction
    Push the trigger
    And kill your addiction

How does it feel to be like you?
How can you hate the way you do?

    Time heals disputes
At least it does for me
    No anger left to release
    I've felt it disappear

    Crawl out of your misery
    And defeat your insanity
    Don't push the trigger
    'Cos you are free

How does it feel to be like you?
How can you hate the way you do?

I'm fine with it, just backup your own game and patch or download it without talking about it.

I meant clones/bootlegs OF backup devices. Such as the FX-32, Game Partner/Boxer and numerous other Thai/Taiwanese Pro Fighter/Game Doctor knockoffs. "Pirate backup devices" would hardly be a reasonable name. Backup units in theory should be no more illegal than a Game Genie (which wasn't dubbed illegal in court.) The only country to strictly ban copier usage was the UK, due to some lawsuits against major console sceners by Sega.

I always got the impression SNES was hurt most by backup units... or wasn't it?

It's a device that lets you play pirate games, ie ROMs. I know that's not their only use but be honest, it's what they were bought for back in the day.
