Remember Sonic 2 HD, which unceremoniously died following its alpha release because of nonsense regarding former project programmer L0st? The quick excitement and then sorrow of the project’s release and cancellation reverberated across the Internet and it looked like the dream had finally died. Not so fast. In the waning hours of Sonic’s 23rd Birthday (and we do hope you keep your Sonic memories coming in), the Sonic 2 HD Facebook group sprung back to life and announced the project was back on. Turns out that a newcomer, who remains anonymous, stepped up with an engine to fill the hole L0st’s firing caused, and the engine received approval by project head Vincent. While the team is a short a few members from its original development (citing real life obligations), it looks like the project will continue development. If any of you are feeling creative and have the skills to assist the group, it may not be a bad time to contact the team and show them your stuff. I'm legitimately excited to see the best game ever in gorgeous HD. Like, really excited. So, so excited.
I have to admit that I'm also looking forward to this. Loved Sonic 2, CD and the original. Never really got in to Sonic 3 though.
If memory serves the remake is using a reverse engineered original S2 engine gameplay should be accurate or same. S3+Knuckles is lengthy enough that I'd call it fan service for classic Sonic fans. Does that describe you? Then you're missing out. What is SFR?
I loved sonic 4 when it came out but now I just see it as an unfinished pile of Tails Stool. Oh by the way. YOU CAN Play Sonic CD in HD, it's on PSN and XBLA right now. Great port too they added Tails the US and Japanese soundtrack, a few filter options it's great. But the more I play Sonic CD the more it seems the Level designs are a bit hmm not sure how to explain, Not bad just very unsoniclike.
I wasn't that excited until I realized this was an actual HD version of Sonic 2 and not that 3D thing with so much foreground clutter you could barely see Sonic...was that SFR? Sonic CD isn't nearly as good as some claim it is, the whole time travel mechanic is confusing and the levels aren't that good, especially not the unfair and frustrating Stardust Speedway boss battle.
I'm not disagreeing with you there. The Music in the JP/EU Sonic CD though saves the game from being a complete suck fest though.
I would love to see a CD2 done in HD sprites. Sometimes I feel that I'm the only one who enjoyed the time travel concept, though it could have been executed way better. CD is either love it or hate. Those who love it claim it to be the best Genesis era Sonic game, myself included. The level design I will say isn't the best when trying to time travel and if you are going from zone to zone without caring about the time travel, then they are short (they are longer vertical than horizontal). I thought it was cool seeing the levels in the distant past or far future. Will agree that the Stardust Speedway boss is poorly laid out and the zone as a whole is my least favorite in the game.
My main gripes with sonic CD are trying to get enough speed in a cramped level to go into the past then taking the high road where the Machine ALWAYS is and if I have enough rings beating those frustrating as hell bonus stages. It's not a terrible game at all but They could have been smarter with design choices.
SFR is dead probably cus it was too ambitious. Gameplay aside, CD had better music and level aesthetics.
I don't hate Sonic CD But Sonic 2 is my preferred Sonic game. Sonic 2 is in my top 5 favorite games of all time list
How about 2d Demakes of all the 3d Sonics? They already have a Sonic 1-3 heroes which I THINK may work on a flash cart.
Forgot to correct you but the 2011 release of CD isn't in HD. It's a port that runs natively on each system and adds a few new things.
SFR was pretty good, yes tons of stuff on screen but it actually made the game look both modern and classic at the same time, and its 2D, not 2.5D like SG or SC were. As for CD, ironically that is one Sonic game that would be better in 3D than in 2D. Exploration in a 2D environment sucks, it makes the game unbearably slow at times. In 3D with an open-world kind of setting the time travel of sonicCD would be much better
