We all know about the various Sonic CD versions that have gotten out into the public. Here is the current status of originals: Sonic CD 510: Most likely in some collector/hoarders collection in Brazil. Sonic CD 712: One copy in the hands of Pachuka, another with Stealth. Sonic CD 806 (Demo): Several likely exist, drx has one. Sonic CD 920 (Prerelease): Stealth has the only known copy. Anyway, I was just hoping I could pick the brains of some people here, if any of you were around at the time these surfaced, do any of you know their origins, perhaps why they were built and released by Sega, or whether other prototypes exist. One of the reasons I'm so interested in Sonic CD lately is that, in doing some disassembly work on the 510 beta, I found some file references to DISP0.MMD and DISP1.MMD which aren't present in the CD, but could have been present in the source (as the 510 beta was likely a show build for TGS or whatever.) Anyway, if this sort of inquisitiveness isn't allowed, sorry, but I've always been curious as to why so many prereleases and protos got out, and if there are more

Assembler posting saying he had a prototype that had two cut levels? Then the topic got closed, I assumed because drx was gonna buy it. Sucks when things suddenly go all hush hush and you never hear word of it again.
Yeah, I even made a topic about it which was deleted quickly. The purpose of those builds are to show game content to the public by sending copies to magazines or game shows. They also serve the purpose of backups and proof that they actually work on the real hardware. Developers often create weekly builds to test if everything they've got works ok on the actual console/computer.
Quickly deleted? I guess my comment will be deleted eventually too, or any mention of the thing(I have a tendency to always post things others want deleted, guess I'm too observant? ). Would be nice to know what's going on though, I wouldn't think asking would hurt, but apparently it has some negative effects like letting other hoarders know where to grab stuff first or something. I don't perfectly know why it's not OK to ask, but heck it's been so long, surely something came of it that wouldn't hurt to reveal by now?
I do it was about unreleased levels if i remember but nothing came of it. i always wanted to know if these where zones we knew about with some changes or all new never seen before zones.
Yeah, mostly likely on that. rod_wod: I'd guess these levels were R2 and R9 if they really used that naming scheme for stuff. It would have to be earlier entirely than 510 as 510 doesn't even reference R2 and R9 files along with the other files that are mentioned but not present. DISP0.MMD and DISP1.MMD were likely in the internal copy of 510, but not put in the release as they weren't needed or something. Beats me what their purpose was :shrug:
I remember the last thread and have been holding my breath ever since! At the very least I'm dying to hear if this build really exists or not...
Okay okay let's not keep talking about that, the original thread was locked for a reason and again, discussion was taken private for a reason. I am well aware of that build and have taken that into consideration but as the staff wants it private, I'm dropping that now. If there is nothing else to contribute, then let this thread die I guess, it has served a purpose, and I just want to make sure anything sensitive isn't compromised...
