SonicFan 254 has been busy creating a Sonic Mania mod for our beloved Dreamcast! Yeah sorry about that, I was super excited too until I discovered that it wasn't what I thought it was.
i don't know how the engine works but the retro engine source code is open source i believe. and it has been ported to dreamcast before. it may be many years but someone eventually might try to fork the engine and attempt adding support for the sonic mania assets and resources hell, maybe people will attempt a 'sonic megamix' style mod of sonic cd and 'port' some levels from SM. interesting thought imo
Ah man I was excited for a second. I actually haven’t picked up sonic mania yet, thought it would be fun to play it on Dc
Pretty much. It's to be expected though, since the game is basically like an expansion for the Sonic 2/CD style of Sonic game with way better sprite art and cooler bosses, along with those Sonic 3 blue balls bonus stages (and the polygonal gem chasing bonus stages). If you don't like Sonic 2 and CD though, you probably won't like it.
