Thank you for the detailed explanation. Regular shitty spraypaint is crazy expensive in Denmark (usually £7-8 a can) so I might as well try some Vinyl Dye next time :)

Other than the fact that it seeps into the plastic, it doesn't require any special techniques compared to regular spraypaint, right?

That's right, no special techniques required, just spray in light even coats and you'll be fine. Be careful not to overdo it though. I made that mistake and it left dull grey patches instead of a nice matte black finish. The instructions on the can say that if a re-spray is required you need to wait 7 days for the dye to cure, which I did, but it was quite frustrating! Still, it seemed worth it as it looked fine after I re-sprayed it.

    Damn 7 days :D

So basically you have to apply small thin layers in one go, until you are finished? No 30 min break in between the layers like they recommend on normal spray cans?

Vinyl paint is what normally I use for the consoles and controllers but I use the white one as a coat and then I pain on it other colors. Also the vinyl spray paint I use normally take 30 min to set for the other coat.

No, sorry, I didn't explain myself very well. You need to wait at least 10 minutes between each coat and get all coats done within an hour. It'll be dry to the touch a few hours after that.

I just finished another case mod and would really appreciate any feedback. This time it doesn't have a Sonic Team emblem (I might still add one, but I quite like the big clear window - what do you guys think?) but it does have a VGA mod and better low-profile, wide-angle LEDs :)

Work just became a whole lot more fun as I've attached it to my second monitor :)

Thanks :) This new one is really growing on me now. I like the clean, uncluttered look of the big window.

I'm especially pleased with this Dreamcast as I originally bought it for £3.09 as a faulty machine (it looked like it had been treated badly - see the broken AV port on the rear - and it wouldn't read discs). It's always nice to restore an old DC to its former glory :)

i got one for £2.50 untested, it's a bit rough cosmetically and worse now because i tried to clean it with the wrong type of cleaning wipes by mistake(dont ask) so it'll be getting a paint job, the window looks great on the DC, not sure what else i'm gonna do.

I like that folk are doing this with old crappy DC casings. Well done chaps.

How did you fix the non-reading discs issue?

What is the switch above the power socket for (the one labeled 1/0)?

EDIT: Nevermind, I looked at the pic with the case open, it's for the window LEDs right?

Yep that's right :) It's for the LEDs in case people find them too garish/distracting ;)

It was just a loose lid switch. So far I've bought nine old Dreamcasts to play around with and of those four have had problems with the lid switch. The switch is low quality and each time the problem has just been that it's a bit wobbly. I just stick a little bit of plastic down next to the switch to help firm it up and it seems to do the trick :)
