Christian Whitehead and co. have just released their new version of the Sonic 1. Features widescreen graphics, enhanced audio and extra characters. I just downloaded it and I'm quite impressed but alas it is just Sonic 1 all over again. The japanese have just been given a 3D version developed by a different team on the 3DS e-shop or whatever it's called but there's no mention of how and when that might be coming to the west. Here's a link to the iOS version of Sonic 1 HD, it's a free update if you already bought the game https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/sonic-the-hedgehog/id316050001?mt=8
I can't find it on the Android app store or is it another one of those shaft the Japanese market place just like the 360 does?
I know it hit Europe first and then the US about 12 hours later. As for the JP release, I have no idea.
I think I read somewhere that people that purchased the 'not-so-great' old version can grab this for free. If that's true, thumbs up to SEGA.
It went up on to the Japanese Android store today. I have to say it's a fantastic version of Sonic, better than the original in many ways too. Best of all I can play it on my phone and car Android powered Sat-nav. Now, if only it was blutooth controller compatible.
Apparently it'll work with an app that allows a Wiimote connection but I'm not sure what that is as I'm not an Android user (just something I read on the Sonic Retro forums). I want to try it with Bluestacks for Mac but I'm not sure how I can get the .apk without an Android device.
Ah, I know the software you mean for using a Wii remote. As for the apk file, there's a few places on the net you can get Android games but of course it's not legal.
I've tried various different older games on my iPhone, and while graphically they look pretty accurate to the originals, the controls just never seem to work for me. Games like Sonic were never meant to be played on a touchscreen. Even shmups, which sometimes work a little better because you can directly control the position of the ship as opposed to using a virtual d-pad, still don't play as well as on a real controller. Tilt controls are even less accurate. Smartphones are cool for all sorts of different reasons, but they suck as gaming devices. I'm now starting to regret having sold my 3DS.
To activate level select/extra options in this port, tap S E G A (in that order) on the "SEGA" screen and you will hear a ring chime, then while on the title screen tap with both thumbs at the same time. (it's easiest to hold both thumbs on the screen before the title screen appears) To activate debug mode (with lots of cut object fun): play these songs on the level select menu: 01 09 09 01 00 06 02 03. Then while playing tap on your score to enter/exit object placement mode. (code is the original games release date of June 23, 1991) Note: You must be playing "no save mode" for this to work.
Thanks for the codes, rika_chou. I'm going to give them a try right now. I can't get the debug to work. I've entererd the song numbers as listed but the only thing I get is a sound glitch when jumping. Taping the score doesn't do anything
I've released version 1.1 for my Retro-Engine datafile packer/unpacker, Retrun-Sonic. There is partial support for the datafile format of the new Sonic the Hedgehog remake for iOS and Android. More information at http://unhaut.fav.cc/retrun By the way now it means you can listen to the soundtrack on any device you like!
Better value would be the Sonic Classic collection on DS. People complain of some of it's screen tearing but I personally have had no problems with it. it also includes the Sonic & Knuckles combination carts on the chip- the game is also pretty crisp, even for a DS screen. It's also pretty darn cheap too- I picked it up for £5 locally about a year ago.
Yes, that's what I'm using. Playing this on the TV via HDMI looks amazing and plays amazing using the Wii remote.
