Sonic The Hedgehog CD (FINISHED AT PART 29!) (4/18/09)

Sonic CD is what IHMO call the quintessential CD-based 2D Sonic game. If that sounds too high-phrased to anyone, its because there really is no other Sonic game of its kind. I personally find the time concept ahead of its time as a Sonic game. If I had never played or heard of Sonic CD before during the GEN/MD era, and I was a Saturn owner waiting for a true Sonic game at the time, I would have expected the time concept to have shown up in a Sonic 4. I have no idea if that makes any sense, so don't argue with me. So yeah, basically I would have expected such a concept to arise later in time.

For anyone's enjoyment, or if you've absolutely nothing better to do, which was sort of the case with me. I'd like to show my You Tube PEMNAS playthough in order of how I played it. I personally love this game.

    Here is the Playlist:
(Part 1) Start Up + Palmtree Panic Zone 1
    (Part 2) First Special Stage
(Part 3) Palmtree Panic Zone 2
    (Part 4) Second Special Stage
(Part 5) Palmtree Panic Zone 3
(Part 6) Collision Chaos Zone 1
    (Part 7) Third Special Stage
(Part 8) Collision Chaos Zone 2
    (Part 9) Fourth Special Stage
(Part 10) Collision Chaos Zone 3
(Part 11) Tidal Tempest Zone 1
    (Part 12) Fifth Special Stage
(Part 13) Tidal Tempest Zone 2
    (Part 14) Sixth Special Stage
(Part 15) Tidal Tempest Zone 3
(Part 16) Quartz Quadrant Zone 1
(Part 17) Quartz Quadrant Zone 2
(Part 18) Seventh AND Final Special Stage
(Part 19) Quartz Quadrant Zone 3
(Part 20) Wacky Workbench Zone 1
(Part 21) Wacky Workbench Zone 2
(Part 22) Wacky Workbench Zone 3
(Part 23) Stardust Speedway Zone 1
(Part 24) Stardust Speedway Zone 2
(Part 25) Stardust Speedway Zone 3
(Part 26) Metallic Madness Zone 1
(Part 27) Metallic Madness Zone 2
(Part 28) Metallic Madness Zone 3 & FINAL FEVER!
(Part 29 / THE END) Cosmic Eternity - Good Ending

The playthrough consists of individual videos, each containing a Zone and a Special Stage between each of them. Also, PEMNAS stands for "PLEASE EXCUSE MY NOOB ASS SKILLS". I invented the term myself. Its created to separate my videos from being called a Speed-Run (its not meant to be one) or a walkthrough. Its really just to show others my average-level game skillz in da game. I know, its probably a stupid little gimmick but I just felt like being creative. Whatever.

    FINISHED!! Thanks for watching everyone!!!

Euro OST is the same as the Japanese. The US version was changed depending on what you read because of; Legal reasons/Marketing.

My favourite Sonic game by far.

    Nice videos.

Sonic 3+Knuckles is my favorite Sonic, but I still love Sonic CD. It had a certain atmosphere to it that none of the others did.

Unlike most people on the internets, I liked the US soundtrack a lot though. I even bought the soundtrack CD, and composer Spencer Nilsen's solo album "Architects of Change".
Is there any CD where the "Past" tunes were released? Maybe on a Euro/JP soundtrack?

Just buy the european or japanese copy and stick it in a CD player.

As far as I'm aware though, there isn't a commercial release of the past tunes in an OST.

I never had the SCD version, only the PC one, so it never had the same impact that S3+K had, but still I agree that it was the best.

oh i did not know that the jap and euro are the same.but palmtree panic is shite on the u.s and its got the worst front cover for a mega cd game.

also i dont think you can play the past tunes of the cd you can only play them of the games level select.

and did they change the music for the gamecube xbox and pc copy's of the game.

That's because Sega was lazy and used the PC version of both Sonic CD and Sonic R (probably because they had trouble emulating the Mega CD and Saturn) in Gems Collection, and the PC version originally had the US soundtrack in all regions :-(

I like it too, more than the jap music.
Architects of Change is good? I don't even know Spencer Nilsen had an solo album.

It's pretty good, yeah. Not like the Sonic CD soundtrack though, no guitars or any of that. It's more like.... I dunno, new age/contemporary/synthesizer stuff. About half of it is real sedate, and the other half is more up-tempo modernistic music. There are no real vocals on any of the tracks; it's more atmospheric music. It probably qualifies as an acquired taste.
There are a couple of cheap copies on Ebay right now if you're interested.

Sonic CD is different because it wasnt done by the sonic team. On the other hand neither did every other sonic game since SA2 (guess that back in the heyday quality did matter, and the guys behind CD had to show ST they were up to it).

Now, its just me, or isnt SonicCD asking for a 3D remake?

The fact is that time travel gameplay relies on exploration, and exploration on a 2D platform game is kinda annoying. Just imagine big (as in GTA-big) 3D worlds you can time-travel into anytime:eek:h:

I'll rather see a time-travel comeback than most of these half-baked, half-assed experiments like werewolves, swords and shit...

The reason the past tunes weren't changed for the U.S. release was a technical one; the songs weren't typical CD tracks, they were actual files on the disc. So you couldn't play the past tunes in a CD player even if you wanted to for the same exact reason.

Sonic 3+Knuckles is the best, but Sonic CD I love because it was the first PC game I owned myself. Really though, it just plays like Sonic 1 with some extra shit. I like the American versions music, fuck you guys, lol. Both of the soundtracks are good. Both of them have some bullshit on them, but how the fuck is the japanese versions boss music better then the USA's boss music?!? That shit is creepy.

The PC version has the past songs in redbook, so there rippable.

Japanese Sonic CD was the better version - FACE IT !

Good Lord...I remember when Sega America was bragging about composer Spencer Neilsen as being this top musician for the Sega CD peripheral. I bought the Japanese version of Sonic CD because I was an early adopter. I LOVED the soundtrack. Across between electronic music, funk, and Pop-ish.Then I later found out the music was changed out of the Japan version for Spencer's tunes. I had to write a letter to Sega in Redwood, CA telling them they butchered the soundtrack and that I purchased the import copy instead. Ofcourse I never got a response back . But i'd hoped that someone at Sega had read it :)
