Has anyone found a copy of this yet? I believe a few of the developers have copies, but so far no one outside of (former members of) SOA have a copy. I heard somewhere that there were around 3 copies burned (I'm not really sure on that, though). :toimonster:.

I don't think a playable version was ever compiled. If I recall, from the interviews and whatnot, it was still very much in the "bits and pieces" phase.

Alledgedly there is more than one version of Sonic Xtreme - they restarted the game 2 or 3 times based on different engines.

I'm not too bothered about this game leaking. For doubt development was halted for a reason, and releasing a beta will get rid of the mystery of the title.

I've played two different builds of this and neither got out of the "test level" stage.

One was simply Sonic running around a grassy field.

The other was a boss fight against Metal Sonic in an arena styled after the Casino Zone.

Neither was anywhere near a game.

If you want to see what the tech became go check out the Sonic Compilation for the Saturn to see the engine running there or check out Sonic Adventure for the DC to see how it became a full game. :)

IIRC there was also a version based on the NiGHTs engine that was scrapped after SoJ complained to SoA about it.

I was just playing Sonic R today...and I find it hard to believe that Sega...America or Japan...couldn't get out any kind of 3D sonic plaformer...

Sonic R has fully Polygonal models, and fairly detailed tracks...albeit with a fairly close draw in distance...but it isn't too close...and If they were to use sprites, they'd probably be able to do much better....

Finally...if I recall, Sonic R was done using only one of the Saturn's main processors....the other was just used to do the really smooth fade in affect...instead of awful popup.

I'm bummed. I want my saturn sonic game.

I wouldn't trust those links too much, Sonic 3 was made exclusively in Japan, despite what that site says.

The last (extra) level in Sonic R is amazing, with decent framerate and resolution, plus the entire track is transparent. The special effects in that stage look as good as, if not better than, the ones in Burning Rangers.

As for Sonic Jam (the Sonic compilation for Saturn), the framerate is so smooth, with excellent resolution, and amazing transparent water in the stream. I know the 3D engine in Sonic Jam is based on Sonic X-treme long time ago, and always have thought how awesome a 3D Sonic game on Saturn could be with that engine.

If you ask me today, I would still rate the Saturn as my all-time favorite system, with Dreamcast in second.

This one is going straight to hl718.

Since you are claiming to have actually played an early version of the game and since we may safely assume that the game did not go anywhere outside Sega, then you should work for SOA at the time.We may even assume that you worked on Sonic Xtreme if the game never left the dev team and a few people associated with it.

Rumour has it that at the time Sonic Xtreme was being developed Sega was developing an Nvidia based console that would operate on carts. The Sonic Xtreme producer claimed in his interview that Sonic Xtreme was considered for that system as well.

Do you have any info on this system mate?
It would be great if you shared it with us.

I always thought the reason it was so rubbish is that it was made by Americans with only Japanese direction.

    And it is shit.

Its rumored that the different builds of the game is backed up in tape at sega japan HQ like all game projects...

    * Imagines the game projects warehouse like the one in Raiders of the Lost Ark * :prayer:

How ironic is it that Yuji Naka would not let Sega of America to use the NiGHTS engine for Sonic Xtreme.

    SoA: How about it, Naka-san?
Yuji: No, you can never use Sonic Team's property to create a Sonic game, you westerners.

In the freebie/demo Christmas NiGHTS on Saturn, you can unlock and play as Sonic in the first level of NiGHTS. So besides the 3D world in Sonic Jam, Christmas NiGHTS could be another glimpse of what Sonic Xtreme could be on the Saturn.

    Yeah, ironic...

"Come up with something new for our flagship character." That just makes no sense at all, does it?
