    Hello Assembler,

Couple issues I would appreciate any help on.

I have recently acquired a CDU921S for use with CD Generator, I am using an AVA 9402 SCSI Card. The issue I'm having is with the drive being detected as a standard CD-ROM drive opposed to CD-Rewritable...I'm wondering if its the host card or the unit, here's what I tried so far

    1. Different SCSI ID's
    2. DIfferent OS - XP / MCE / Vista (Will be trying WIN2K shorty)
    3. Different drivers for the SCSI Card (it used the AH40 Architecture and so the driver for that is used)
    4. I am using the Adaptec program to update the ASPI layers (unless I do this the master unit recorder won't initalise) and the layers update fine
The unit plays Audio CD's no problem, also reads my burned CD-R's - Master Disc Checker prompts to use a version of 1.30 and above when attempt to check master disc information, the CD get software loads up and detects the drive but the record symbols are all greyed out (same thing with my DVR-S201). If I insert any Blank CD-R's (tried three brands) I get a "drive is inaccessible or device not ready".

    Pioneer DVR-S201

This unit detects as a rewritable drive as far as I know, but the issue is more straight forward, it doesn't like any discs...I know this is an authoring drive, I have used Verbatim authoring DVD-R but the LED flashes orange to indicate an compatibility error. Master unit recorder finds the drive which is nice, but yet again all recording options are greyed out due to the disc error.

Any ideas on compatible media for the DVR-S201?

    Thanks in advance

What version of cd gen do you use?
I use the CDU-921S with an AHA-294X PCI controller on Win98SE. The Drive shown as CDU948S but CD-Tool 0.2 and CD/DVD Gen 2.0 work without any problem.
Have you installed the EZ-SCSI Driver and Software V3.1 ?

I never owned one of these drives, and never cared much for CD Gen; however here's some things to consider:

-Sony's CDGen for PS1 is a Windows 3.1 software (16 bits); it will probably work under Windows 9x, but I doubt it'll work (well) under Windows NT/2k/XP/etc
    Known versions: 1.10, 1.30, 1.30 Mod (a hacked version)

-Sony's CD/DVDGen for PS2 is a 32-bit app for Win9x/NT and can do both CDs and DVDs (however I'm not sure if the CDs are in the same "format" as PS1)
    Known versions: 1.20, 1.40, 1.50, 2.00

    CDU921S
According to this document from the PS1 SDK:
    https://mega.nz/#!c0wHkQZY!0uMh2aPjSHg8TzJrQ5DVpNK47OX1vJCTgJ1VtDo8gpQ
    (page 5)
You may want to read the entire document anyway, just in case it provides any other useful tip.

Make sure you update the drive's firmware to v2.02 or later; sometimes newer firmware includes/fixes support for specific media.
Here's a link I found for firmware 2.12 (make sure to read the included documents!!!):

I'm not familiar with that software I'll give that a go I will have to use 98 for that it seems. Software V3.1??
I'm referring to the PS2 CD/DVD Gen to clarify, I will give removing the drivers a go. The PDF helps a lot I haven't even heard of SCSI select so this is all new to me.

Thank you both for the info !

I have one of these DVR-S201 drives with manual so I can test something if needed.

Thank you all for the replies. Currently install Windows 98 SE let's see how this goes!

Those discs Syclopse are gonna be hard to get hold of for sure, i'm hoping this firmware update fixes my issues. Worryingly CD GEN shows Pioneer DVR -S201 2.14????? I hope 2.14 isn't the firmware we shall see

Then I can only assume it hates my Verbatim media, any change-log for 2.14? I doubt it would add incompatibility even if it did I wonder if you can even downgrade the firmware ;(

Couldn't find a changelog for it.
I'd suggest to avoid downgrading, unless someone can confirm it works; most devices block downgrades, or worse, allow it but get bricked.
You can always try flashing the same version you have, but I doubt it'll change anything.
Any other media you can get to try it?

I literally tried all of those but none are for sale on eBaY even when you search its almost impossible to find, not a surprise given these are ancient media which are no-longer in production :(

Yeah, they won't be easy to find, that's for sure.

Other authoring media that should work with the drive (though may or may not work with CDGen:
    Pioneer DVS-R4700S
    Pioneer DVS-R4700SP
    Pioneer DVS-RP4700SP

Also, there's these that I'm not sure are for authoring:
    Pioneer DVS-V3950S
    Pioneer DVS-V3950S-B
    Pioneer DVS-VP3950S-B
    Pioneer DVS-V4700-T19

Oh, the memories... I recall burning discs with the 921, and sometimes even just staring at it too intensely would make the process fail :)
