http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/...cut-in-all-territories-on-both-ps3-models.ars Wonder if Microsoft will follow suit. I'd kill for a $150 4gb base 360 but I doubt Microsoft views the base model as a competitor for the base PS3 model. Anyone know what the sales numbers are like as of late?
I don't think the price drop is related to any poor sales so much as just that they can so they do so in hopes to drive more sales. $250 is still a chunk of change. $150 was the sweet spot for the PS2 I think.
I didn't think so either. A friend of mine apparently owns Sony stock and mentioned the other day that he thought it'd stop dropping once PSN was back up. I'm guessing this is an attempt to see sales figures shoot up causing their stock to go back up as well. EDIT: Upon linking my friend to this article and telling him his stock should rise:
The markets have been rocky as of late in general. A $50 price drop will only do so much. I just read an article about how Sony's craptacular TV division has been bleeding for the last 6 or 7 years, so the emphasis is going to be looking to other products/markets as potential new profit centers to the future as they decide what to do with the TV division. It's only a matter of time before Sony goes the way of Sega. Thank god for that.
I am curious if they would keep the movie division or sell it to someone, I mean it does make a good profit. Plus their ex cameras are widely used in the doc and tv industry, even if they are not the best out there. I got admit though this price drop will give microsoft a run for its money in a lot of ways. Now if it was $200 it could hurt xbox sales somewhat. But if it's like the 3ds price drop might make a slight boost but not much else.
Sony's image really suffered after the whole PSN Debacle this is their way of trying to save face I think.
http://games.slashdot.org/story/11/08/19/0457219/PS3-Enjoys-Retail-Wide-Sales-Spike-After-Price-Cut Not surprised, any price cut means sales increases. Now to watch Sony's stock.
Probably means atleast that they cut manufacturing costs significantly even if they don't rebrand it like going from the PS2 Fat to Slim. It may still look like the Slim but have more chips combined at smaller process sizes or other design changes to cut costs. It's not surprising people react by buying. Alot of people will jump on the bandwagon right after a price drop. I thought about buying a 3DS when the price drop occurred but decided against it.
