Liek others have said, this is NOT fake. Seen loads of these in stores in Japan plus I doubt Traider would be selling Chinese knock offs.

This thing was woefully underutilized, IMO.

I wonder if there was ever a Tamagotchi title that actually used it. I'd snap that up in a hurry, if so.

Yes there were plenty of pet games (in Japanese) for the pocketstation.

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone that contributed to this thread. It was extremely helpful and informative, not only to me but also to the eventual buyer (who happens to be a pretty avid collector himself and now a new member here at Assembler).

    Thanks again all.

Unless you manage to find one with the utility disc, they are pretty limited. You certainly won't be able to use it as a Sony remote control anyway.

And no, I will not lend out my disc.

Erm are you confusing this with say the Sony PS2 hard drive? The pocketstation is mainly used as a memory card and to play sub games and view stats on compatable games which er don't require anything more then a PS1/PS2 and the compatable games.... Feel free to lie down.

As a side note I just listed an ultra cheap pocketstation in the sales thread.

I think it is you who needs to have a lie down. I still own the two white PocketStation's I bought on release day, which both came with the utility disc of which I speak.
On the disc are three programmes. There are two versions of the Sony remote control software and another which allows you to exchange data between PocketStation's via IR. Each programme takes up one block on the memory card.

Next time perhaps you should actually know what you are talking about before you post.

I would like to know the catalogue number of this disc (SLPM, SCPS, etc) mainly as I can't find any reference to it on any Japanese site, nor any pocketstation site.

The point is they aren't limited without this disc, most games allow you to play games with other pocketstation providing you both have the game data on the units and backing up data is a simple use of the memory manager. I've not tried to copy the files from pocketstation to pocketstation mainly as I've never had a reason to, and I am sure 99.9% of the people using pocketstations nowdays would never use it anyway using the pocketstation to play games either on their own or against another pocketstation owner or as a pretty memory card.

What is the remote control function anyway? You keep mentioning it and I can't think what it would be used for...

You can use it as Sony remote control. Just like with older Sony remotes there are 3 different modes. You could for instance have it controlling a TV, VHS deck and a DVD player. I used to cause havoc in electrical stores by turning off every Sony product on display :)

So basically it's something fairly useless then.

Anyway you have not mentioned the catalogue number of this fabled disc.

Well it only seems to be fairly useless to you. You seem to be irrate about not knowing about it from what I can gather, even going as far as suggesting the disc doesn't exist.

Anyway, it's called Play '98. I shall have to come back to you with it's ID.

I think if you asked most people in this thread, turning the pocketstation into a Sony TV remote is a 5 minute novelty but nothing that would be used all the time..

Also Play! 98 Fuyu Taikenban is not a "Utility Disc" but a demo disc that happens to have a couple of Pocketstation utilities on it. You probably got the demo disc for buying playstation hardware as a christmas / new years present as the cover of the said title has a picture of santa on it...

So if anyone wants to be able to control their Sony TV with the pocketstation then you can find it on yahoo auctions for the highly expensive amount of about $3, the catalogue number is PAPX-90061.
