Each time I switch the PS3 on I find that there are new updates available. Seriously, it is beginning to get a bit annoying! Tonight I switched on the PS3, decided to have a look online at the official website as I am interested in various Sony comings & goings and noticed that the PSP had an update.... I thought this must relate to the PS3 update I performed not more than a week ago. So, I read through the update information (which typically was rather scant) and I performed the update. Meander downstairs, try to use my PSP with the PS3 'an update is required' - you are having a giraffe?! So, another update. This time v2.01, which as far as I could see didn't do anything other than return my ability to see the ''friends'' list (which is ALWAYS devoid of people actually on!) To make matters worse I can no longer actually 'connect' the PSP to the PS3, so I have to go through all that nonsense tomorrow... all because I fancied a shot of my PSP & PS3. Honestly, gaming is becoming an on-going updating fest with the time I had spare to enjoy myself wasted on keeping my hardware happy! Will I ever do anything other than update my PS3?
I thought that i read some where that the constant updates were actually a new viral-marketing game set up by sony to entice you to use it more often... at least in sony's defense, with so many updates, the ps3 hasn't become the psp2
2.01 does fix the problem that the PS3 would switch on with a number of routers if you had the remote switch on function on. Still most of the updates don't take that long to do and Since release the PS3 has had a number of decent and useful updates.
Comparing the PS3 updates time with the Microsoft 360 updates it takes a LOT longer. Usually a 360 update is downloaded and applied within 5mins at the very most. The PS3 can take anywhere between 30mins and an hour. That's using a pretty decent BB connection. Lord help those in areas where 512kb or 1Mb is the standard.
Hypothetically speaking, if I were to get a PS3 for Christmas, would I have to download all of the updates released up to this point? Or do the newer ones already have some of the updates?
I guess it depends on it's manufacturing date and how long (probably a while) it has been sat inside a box on a shelf. I did notice that the 60Gb UK PS3 is still listed by Sony as being PS2 compatible. Here was me thinking that all bc had been removed.
That's strange as the first update I performed when I bought the unit took almost an hour and I was just bored to tears. It's not like my BB connex is slow (peaks at around 18Mb as I am so close to the main exchange).
The only time it did take a long time for me is when the GT HD demo came out in Japan and it took about 4 hours to download... I remember Hour 1 - 8% Hour 2 - 16% Hour 3 - 31% Hour 4 - 89% Hour 4.2 - 100% However I do download the updates everytime it says so and it takes no more then 15 minutes which includies installing, downloading the near 1Gb demo games takes a few minutes at most but installation takes longer....
Hmmmmmm? What speed connex you got and with whom? Seems strange that the only thing affected is the PS3 however. I get good speeds on other equipment (PC etc).
Well I am in Japan and I have a cable modem and getting about 20kb/s download speeds. So I assuming that the servers in Japan are better then the servers Sony has in the UK.
I think you'll have to download the 259 updates, so if you get one for Christmas, it should be playable by easter, that is if it doesn't crash. :banghead: It reminds me of Steam and Windows, everyday you've got new updates for them, so you actually never really play, by the time you download the updates for Steam, Windows, sound drivers, GPU drivers, mouse and keyboard updates, coffee machine firmware updates, toilet paper updates and oh brain updates well it's time to go to bed. Anybody misses the gold CD and Cartridge days, at least at that time anything getting our of QA was good to go not "hum...well...we'll fix later via an update..."
One of the IT trainers dropped a brand spanking new PC into our teaching labs yesterday. It didn't work. We looked it over from head to toe unable to ascertain why the HDMI audio drivers refused to load up. It wasn't until he came back and said "I removed Vista and plonked in XP" that the penny dropped. A 10min job lasted about 2hrs! Windows Updates just refused point-blank to do anything. The drivers refused to be deleted, each time we went into "Safe Mode" we'd get rid of them and then we'd cold boot and there they were! But they'd not work... Why? Well, Windows Updates needed a good 30mins to think about it before proceeding. What the hell it was doing we have no idea, but suddenly up popped "Updates exist for this PC" - Yep! I am looking forward to the day we moved from XP to Vista..... :banghead: :noooo: OH:
And you didn't just go to Windows Update manually? That's what I usually do on a new install, even if it hasn't popped up with any update messages.
The 60gb euro ps3 is backward compatible as it has the GS. The 40gb euro ps3 is not. We never got a ps3 with GS & EE :-(
