I just got hold of a Silver PSX and imported 8 Japanese PS2 games. The CD games show fine (Blue Bottom) but most the DVD games (Silver Bottom) are not showing under the controller when inserted. The only DVD Game which is showing and playing fine is Sega Rally 2006. It was sold as fully working and seems odd it will play one DVD based game but not the others. Please could anyone help suggest what the problem might be? I have given the PSX to a friend who has taken a look and believes that the DVD unit is working correctly and it may be a Software/Firmware issue. Is it possible to check the Firmware Version and update it to a later version, if one is available?
possible clogged laser responsible for reading game discs, you need to open the disc drive and inspect it for dust
Or just clean them, as they might be coated with some contamination. These units are already about 10 years old. It's possible that the DVD photodiode of the "WRI" laser (the Sony KWS-200A or Sanyo SF-DB11, used by the PSX for recording) and/or the PS2 laser (KHS-400C) is now very weak. As long as the "WRI" laser cannot be used to determine that the disc is a DVD, the PSX will not bother with switching over to the PS2 laser. Like with the PS3 and PSP, the firmware version can be checked under system settings. However, I think that the Sony PSX update servers have been long taken offline.
