A whole host of answers for connecting the PS2 to the Internet are actually dealt with directly on the Linux Community boards: http://playstation2-linux.com/faq.php#connect_via_pc

(Now realising OE was right about not seeing hyperlinks - ho hum!)

Scroll down to: 'I own a Linux kit and: 2) I want to connect to the Internet...'

Surfing? - Given the PS2's limited memory, it'll be kinda slow & painful, but yes, it is possible.

Serfing? Probably best left to the peasants. :110:

On a retail PS2, it's 32Mb - with linux running, there's not much left for the browser. Someone compiled firefox for the PS2 - it runs, but it's pretty slooooow.

Just to drag this back on topic & because I haven't said it yet - Parris, that's another excellent guide! Looking forward to the PDF.

BTW, Parris: IIRC, I think there are 2 remotes available for the PSX - I vaguely remember seeing 2 different types on Yahoo auctions, but my memory might be playing tricks on me. If I can dig up more info, I'll add it here.

    Well people,

I found out were I can buy the ps2 linux kit, but it is expensive!

It comes with everthing, Keyboard,Drive, ps2 Linux disc and all docs, LOl.

Given the cost I guess I won't be moving ahead on this 1, Lol.

Now I guess i should put this 39001 back together and should probly sell it at some point.

No, no, no WC - oh yeah of little patience! Where are you based? If in Europe then SCEE still sell the software on line along with the cabling. A mouse and keyboard IS still available in the UK via eBay, just do a complete search. Any compatible hard drive will do and then a Network Adapter (which are becoming more expensive). The hardest is obtaining a SYNC on Green Monitor, but the Linux Community site lists all the compatible ones and tbh honest most of the period CRT / TFT Sony monitors worked.

I put together my kit for about £40 ($80). It took a few months of hunting, I'll be honest. If you are in the US, then I am sure the US eBay site will offer better opportunities for bargains than the UK one considering the vast numbers of members, but SCEA have stopped offering the Linux discs and cabling sadly.

You can actually get away with just having the 2 linux discs & the network adaptor, as any USB keyboard & mouse (1) should work & as Parris pointed out, any compatible (2) IDE HDD should also work. Additionally, if you have a HD TV with component inputs, then you can skip the need for the special VGA cable/sync-on-green monitor, as you can setup the linux kit to display at 720p (2), which is not as good as SVGA, but fairly usable.

    (1) mostly all mice - things like wacom tablets don't work out of the box.
    (2) compatibility is mostly down to the physical positioning of the power/IDE connectors on the HDD - the HDD plugs into the back of the network adaptor which therefore requires these connectors to be in specific locations. Some HDD - mostly Western Digital drives - don't fit properly.
    (3) 1080i is theoretically possible, but didn't work when I tried - probably due to lack of memory, but might work if the colour depth was dropped to 16bit.

I was going to comment on this yonks ago, but life got in the way, so better late than never...

    There are 2 PSX remotes - the RMT-P001 (for DESR-7000/5000/7100/5100) & the RMT-P002J (for DESR-7500/5500/7700/5700).

For anyone needing a replacement, they appear fairly frequently on YJ auctions, usually for between 2000-3000 yen.

BTW, an addition to the PS2 linux comments that invaded this thread - I recently re-installed linux & went for a bigger swap (512MB) & started using dillo, which is a nice, compact little browser - this combination runs much nicer.

As soon as I have a flat surface to work on and 10 mins peace I intend to re-vamp the DESR and PSP Test guides to mention additional material and make them into PDF downloads.

I notice that the HDD is a Seagate. This disk has it a special firmware like Maxtor HDD ?

The Seagate will have special firmware if it has the Sony sticker. But only matter if you're going to use the utility disc with it (For official PS2 game software)

What do you mean ? Some PSX HDD's don't have the sony's firmware ?

How is built this firmware ? It will be interesting to know if these firmware are specifics, or if it just a "sony flag" added into maxtor\seagate fw.

HDDs with custom firmware will have the SONY OEM sticker.

Maybe someone with an working DESR unit can confirm it ?

I think the DESR units can play official PS2 HDD titles but for that to work the hard disk must be compatible with their DNAS stuff and that requires custom firmware.

That's why I'm almost positive that the DESR units have a custom SONY drive.

Edit: I just did browse through the pictures on this same thread and saw the drive with a standard sticker.

Parris, can you check if official games work with your DESR ?
An interesting check would be clone it's HD onto another of the same type... If the image works, then the HD is generic.

DESR update discs are very similar to the hdd utility & bbnav install discs.

Sorry, I sold my unit a long time ago. UJ can probably help with any queries or other members. Weird to see so many threads floating to the surface of the swamp recently!
