I recently acquire a PVM 20L5 to replace my current TV and slowly ditch composite video, as of now, none of my systems are RGB modded yet, so for now I am going to use the composite input on the display; however none of the systems seems to work, I get a scrolling picture. I have tried several consoles, I know the RCA to BNC is good because I have a smaller PVM that is composite and S-video only, so the same console and connector works well. I also tried both inputs, I also made sure my composite cables are good by testing on the smaller PVM. Testing with the S-video gave me the same results. I have checked in the PVM menu and make sure I am on NTSC, I even did a factory reset. When I turn on the display I get a NO SYNC message, but another friend who also has a 20L5 identical to mine, can use composite and it works well, we even tried the same console. I also tested with a PS2 with the component cable on the RGB/comp input and I got the same results, I set the PS2 to component and well as RGB and still scrolls. This totally looks like a sync issue but I can't figure out what setting causes this; BTW the menu doesn't scroll when you bring it up, just the picture, so it must be a setting, right?
There is an option to use an external sync. That might be on. On my PVM there is a button on the front for Internal or External Sync. Maybe the menu has that option in there.
You are correct about the button on the left side, but pressing it doesn't affect it and I don't have anything to supply ext sync to it, I was thinking about maybe the V-hold was off but them the menu would scroll too and it doesn't.
fwiw, my 20L4 shows similar issues if I remove the terminator from the ground connector right next to the composite in.
Yup, there were a couple on there already when I got it, and they seem to be necessary. For my model at least. I found a photo of the backside of yours and it looks identical, so maybe give it a try.
Mine doesn't have anything externally, I can add a resistor to see if that does it but the manual says the ports are all terminated.
Don't have the manual on hand, but iirc mine also claimed that everything's terminated, which appears to be false. That, or I simply misunderstood something. Anyways, everything is working perfectly here, with 75ohm terminators present on "line a out", "line b out" and the r/g/b "out" connectors.
Yeah even the back on the monitor says that is terminated, but maybe the circuit is not engaged, it's worth the try, I will use a pot set to 75, is a quick test.
I am going to my buddy and test it there with RGB and compare setting while I am there, if that doesn't shed some light on the issue I am going to open it to see if there is dead capacitor problem, but with a 2004 monitor I doubt it.
Finally I got a resolution for this problem, it was not a setting after all, it was the video board, that's the board on the left side when you look at it from the back, I replaced that and the issue went away, I was able to get a replacement for relatively cheap, largely because a fellow from member totally hook me up with a guy who knows PVM's well and repairs them. Initially he thought it was the Deflection Board, and he sent one but that didn't resolve the issue, next he shipped the video board and that did it, so I end up spending about $79.99 on the PVM.
