    Hi Guys,

I recently picked up a Sony PVM the output looks great when I connect it to my Amiga or SNES, however when I use a SCART RGB cable with Genesis, there is a slight flicker near the top and bottom. It is very slight,, no discoloration or other effects. You can only notice it if you look carefully.

Anyone know what might cause this or what could fix it?

The SCART cable was a custom made 1 from retrogamingcables with stereo.

    MY PVM is PVM2130QM.

Also made a small vid to try and show the issue but you cant really see it from my crap camera: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bEFUODneWkc

    Thanks.

I believe those custom made cables have a THS7314 amplifier on the sync line.

At least mine had it. You can open the scart plug and remove the amplifier and see if there's any improvement.

Amplifying the Mega Drive's image isn't needed. Are you sure you're not thinking of the LM1881 that's used to remove the video part of composite video? It's used in some of their XRGB-mini cables to achieve better sync.

OP: It could just be a matter of modifying that RGB cable to use composite sync rather than composite video. But I'm no expert on PVM monitors.

This one claims to have a sync boost.

When I got a similar cable it had a THS7314 on the sync line.

Genesis needs no boosting whatsoever on any of the RGB and sync lines. Remove any boosters, resistors, capacitors, and all should be good.

Actually many people recommend the 75 ohms res + 220uF caps on the R G B lines I'm not sure if this is some kind of myth or this could actually harm your setup.

Right now I have the laseractive RGB modded and the Sega Master System both lacking those caps and resistors and the image is really really bright.
I turn the brightness to 30% on those.

Since I don't have a cable lacking the resistors and caps on the sega genesis I can't say for sure but I believe it might be a good idea to keep those.

Also as a side note arcade boards when you use a super gun or a consolized system will output 5.5 vpp on the RGB lines, while consoles output 0.75 to 1.0 vpp.
On those cases resistors and caps I would say are a good idea.

The 220uf caps on th rgb lines remove any voltage that is coming to tv with the signal. The resistor weakens both the signal and the voltage going through the pins. Keeping the caps may indeed make the picture better, but if colors are too bright add the resistors otherwise they won't help you.

Thanks for all the posts so far. I'm no expert on this and wouldnt know where to remove it from. I also have a 32 but no power for it yet. I have read that the 32x has its own RGB output so I am hoping that scart plug wont have the same issue. If not I will open it and find out.

Edit: I have been doing some more tests and it seems the very slight flicker is only when in NTSC mode, which is strange. It is still full color and looks great, maybe I am just picky and this is how it always was - but I'm not sure. I tested this with a PS1 as well and NTSC and PAL games. Still if anyone knows if this is normal that would be great.

Also, made a vid trying to show the problem, its most prevalent on the edges:

There's no way Mega Drive could be outputting a interlaced image from RGB right? Also, notice that my TV doesn't detect the mode on the left it normally shows, NTSC, PAL, etc.

Hmm I put a link to the issue with a youtube video and it got deleted?

Regardless, I was able to fix it by flipping the tv over a couple of times, who knows what it was - turning it on its side then back straight did the trick.

It may have been affected while being shipped.

Next problem is the top right of the screen shows a bit a purple discoloring... But its something I can live with as opposed to the unbearable blinking.

Still if anyone has any clues on fixing it... there is no deguass option on this TV :(

There are electrical magnetic ribbons that you can buy.
Those were very common back in the arcade days.

Some are made from dead TVs.

I fixed the purple, but the flicker came back. No idea what causes it. Its as if the internal CRT flicker fix has stuffed up - only happens for NTSC.

If I try my Amiga and change the resolution to PAL interlaced it flickers like CRAZY (way more that with the Mega Drive). No idea, really pissing me off, I have taken it to TB repair shop so hopefully they can sort it out.
