Starting March 28, consumers can buy DVD-UMD combo packs of “The Grudge,†“Resident Evil,†“Underworld,†“Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon†and MGM’s “The Terminator†for just pennies more than Sony typically charges for a new DVD. A second batch of DVD-UMD combos — “Ghostbusters,†“Mad Max,†“The Fifth Element†and “Snatch†— arrives April 25, with a third wave is slated to come on the market in May. Each combo is priced at $28.95. Sony typically charges $24.96-$26.96 for new DVD releases, while titles new to UMD generally list for $19.95. A catalog Blu-ray disc will run about $18, but new release DVDs will go for $23.45, wholesale. And starting March 28, you’ll be able to buy combination packs of DVD and UMD movies for little more than just buying the DVD. If this strategy works, the company will think about trying it with Blu-ray discs as well. The combo price is $28.95, which is notable considering a new release DVD is about $25-$27 and a UMD is typically $20. I don't see paying that much more for a fucking move that i already bought. I wish Sony would stop pushing umd prices up on shit that has less content.
Who on earth would buy a DVD-Blueray combination pack? DVD/UMD almost makes sense, at least you can take a umd with you on the go, but who's going to spend the extra cash to get a "high def" and a "crappy def" version of the same movie?
I think it's a reasonably smart move on Sony's part. If you're going to buy a movie and you own a PSP, splash out a few bucks extra and get it on UMD at the same time. I don't personally see the appeal of having UMD movies in the first place (I can't imagine when I'd be away from a decent sized TV for long enough that I'd be desperate enough to put up with a tiny screen for a feature-length film), but if I did I could see sense in this offer. Yeah, all the announced titles are re-re-re-releases, but that doesn't mean all future titles will be.
The UMD pack in part is good. Just wish it was done on more newer/recent titles. Yet take into consideration that the MSRP listed is higher then what you will actualy pay at most stores. Most UMD's are Sudgested for a $20-$30 price range but most you can pick up for $13-$20 each. So it's quite posible you'll get the DVD/UMD set for $18-$20 when you go to buy movies. It's a really smart move that should help boost UMDs even more. Also regarding UMD movies. The PSP screen is amazing and on some UMDs the movie just looks so vivid and nice on the PSP screen. As for using the PSP for a full length film, its fine if your on a plane or a long trip but over all crinks the neck too much while at home. Yet Tv eps are freaking awsome (since they are short burst).
why doesnt sony just stop doing this whole oddball format crap, its bad enough with memory stick duos on psp.
Not yet (not sure if their are any plans for other devices to support them either). So much for 'Universal Media Discs'.
Because they have blind followers who will pay any price of admission inorder to play GTA. Besides, their Sony, they do what they want and we're supposed to worship them. By tomorrow they will have killed us both for questioning their genius.
sony doesn't control GTA, if they did, I doubt they'd like seeing LCS ported to the ps2 like it's going to be, kinda kills the advantage of it being on the psp. This is a free market, if people like the format with sony's insistence, then they won. If it fails, they move on. It's not the first time...
I never implied that Sony owns the license to GTA.. And no it does not kill the advantage of a PSP release, last i checked the psp is portable, so people will buy it so they can play it 'on the go'. Realistically the GTA crowd wiil just buy both versions. This just dredges up one of the problems I have always had with Sony. Their game division is not innovative, They spend time making a product that looks pretty, breaks easy and requires expensive add ons that are conveniently made almost exclusively by Sony. I realize that it is a 'free market' but then again, this is not the game industry that I was proud to be involved in.
all this Sony hate is starting to get boring... Honestly, Sony is shit. Yes. But the other companies are incompetent. Sony "wins" the battle with shitty products (as you said). But the others don't do a great work to stop this dominance either. innovative? Nintendo is very innovative (Mario Soccer, Mario this, Mario that, Zelda this, Zelda that..... What about Microsoft? are they innovative? No. They biggest exclusive franchise is a lousy and overrated fighting game, that only got attention because big polygon boobs. The game industry does not innovate for quite some time, but you can't forget that Eye Toy and games like Ape Escape and Katamary Damacy are PS2 only. Stop the hate
well its tended to be blamed for the industry downfall in certain ways, and like in the days nintendo was the tyrant people were out there begging for their downfall, i wouldn;t be schocked if microsoft is next if the ps3 goes downhill, other then that this bashing will end pretty fast.
If you ever got the train from West Palm Beach to Raleigh (~21hrs, usually with delays on top) and a guy in a seat in the opposite aisle was watching them, while you were left twiddling your thumbs, you'd understand
Sure but I'll take Jak & Daxter 1-3, Sly Cooper 1&2, Rachet & Clank over Mario Sunshine any day. A game does not have to be innovative to be good. Only people who don't know video games would think that. Also what expensive add ons does sony create? I see eye toy & HDD for FFXI (hey thats squares fault, not sony). I don't remember needing a single damn add on to play 98% of the Ps2's library. :banghead:
I think this is getting out of hand and I'm tired of having words put in my mouth. I do not think any of the current industry leaders are very innovative nor did I say that I did. I do not HATE Sony. I do not like Sony and I NEVER have, This is not some trend, there are those of us who just do not like them. That's it Period. I am not trying to rub it in anyones face. If you like their systems then be my guest and buy them. If you want to forget about innovation then that's fine as well. Let's talk first party developed games..... ??? I'm no Sony expert here, but not much comes to mind. Personally I like it when the companies I choose to support actually make the product that I enjoy. Not just provide a platform. I understand that the platform is important and some think that Sony does a good job at this, but like I said personally I do not like their products.
Ok. I undestand your point. I don't like Sony products either. But i won't stop playing the games i like. And 90% of them are on the PS1 and PS2. I really want to buy something better than Sony shitty quality, but honestly Microsoft and Nintendo aren't doing a great job to give Sony a stronger competition. Plus they don't just provide the platform. Just some mentions: - Shadow of Collosus - Ape Escape Series - Wild Arms series - Vib Ribbon series - God of War - Gran Turismo series (Polyphony Digital is practically 100% funded by Sony) - Socom series - Killzone You'll see tons of original games on those links. Fantavision is just one example of them. Most people think that SCE is the same thing as the old Sony Imagesoft. Honestly it's not the same thing. Nintendo lost my respect a long time ago when they started releasing every type of game you could imagined, and just put Mario for it to sell. I won't be surprised if they released a GTA type Mario games. Plus they don't respect the customers. The DS was released a year ago, and they are already going to released a new version? What about GameBoy Advance? If it was Sony doing this people would hate them. But it's Nintendo, so people "understand". On the Microsoft side, I really, really want them to have success with the 360. But i think they could have waited 3 or 4 months to release it and have more and better games for launch. Specially in Japan.
Thanks for the info johnny. To be honest with you I don't buy to many new games anymore and I haven't for quite a few years. I spend most of my time and money on fleshing out my collection.
